Hmmm.....

I have a 400 in my 1981 F350 but I don't think I have any front-engine ready-made pics I can post and, besides, I don't have AC + my smog pump is taken off (but I have some pics) + I'm not confident I have a factory PS pump installation (I don't at all have what is in the below diagrams).

But, here's what the FoMoCo 1980/89 Light Truck Parts Catalog (available on CD from www.hipoparts.com) has, maybe this will help you, let me know....

Alternator:

Power Steering:

My Smog Pump:

The smog pump is installed in the alternator bracket:

Mine is driven by a small belt that connects to the alternator (you can see the 2-groove pulley on the alternator in the picture).

Air Conditioning:

This depends on if you have dealer-added or factory air.

Dealer Added:

I believe the next three are of factory-installed AC:

The Whole Tamale (minus accessories):

The catalog shows this diagram as being typical of what a V8 engine will look like, not exact.

Notice the smog pump is connected by a belt to the main water pump pulley, I have no idea if that's how yours needs to be since you have AC and I don't.

It may help nevertheless:

I can prolly (maybe) come up with more pictures of stuff if you let me know exactly what you're looking at, just let me know, OK?

It's a big, long bolt that goes:

- Through the front of the bracket (towards the engine)
- Then through the alternator
- Through the back side of the bracket
EDIT - I believe then into the smog pump belt-tensioning bracket, I'll hafta look tomorrow
- Into the head

The other side of the bracket (towards the center of the engine) is attached to the water pump with a bolt or two (I forget exactly, the diagram implies two).

Another, smaller bolt in the bolt in the bottom, lessee here, I think it goes through the secondary (lower) bracket FROM the face of the engine, then screws into the alternator. This is the one used for holding the alternator in place when adjusting the belt tension.

The following are the only ready-made pictures I have, take a look and compare them (particularly the 2nd & 3rd) to the diagram and my description above, lemme know if I should go out and take some more pictures (tomorrow, in the daylight) of any trouble areas, OK?

The smog pump attaches to that bracket in pretty much the same fashion as the alternator ('cept in different holes, obviously).

The parts catalog doesn't seem to have any other pictures of the 400 alternator stuff.

I would seriously have a field day in Saskastchewan. It seems like every single 80-81 truck there is a Ranger trim truck that goes for less than $1,000. Here we have a bunch of Custom trim trucks that people try to sell for $2,000.
