This code comes and goes which makes it hard to find the cause. I can tell it's going to turn on the CEL by the way the truck ('05 F350 5.4L) is running. Some days the truck will idle a little rough. When I step on the gas, truck makes a low groaning noise. Other times it runs fine and light will eventually go out. I checked the vacuum lines, exhaust leaks, and replaced the sensor 1 O2 sensor. Anyone got any ideas? Fuel filter?
I cleaned MAF approx 3 months ago. Maybe it got dirty again, I'll check. I didn't think the VCT 5.4L had a PCV, but I'll check into that again. I checked the vacuum hoses and looked for an exhaust leak, all checked good. Truck ran great today, no problems whatsoever. So now P0174 is pending.
The PCV is located "inside" the valve cover and cannot be replaced independently of the valve cover.
Okay, well how do check to see if it's bad? Do you have to pull the valve cover and check to see if the ball inside the PCV isn't stuck? Can it be cleaned with brake cleaner, etc... to free it up? Thanks for the info.

That is a good question... and I don't know the answer. However, your recommended solution sounds as good as any.
