Are '48-'50 frames different than '51-'52?

Ross, is correct. The front part of the '52 frame is a bit different in the front engine mounting area. Other than that the sheet metal will work. I have '48-50 sheet metal on my '51 F-4.

Does that mean a flathead from a 50 won't fit into a 52 without modification? Or are they bascially interchangeable?

Hard to say, on the one hand the rubber mounts are unique for '52, even for the V8's. Maybe you just need to use the '52 biscuits.

You can put a 50 V8 in a 52 - same 20" o/c mounting system - just use biscuits for the 52 as they're specific to 52 frames.
Sheetmetal swaps as a package - you can't mix and match any pieces between 48/50 and 51/52.
48-51 frames were the same. 52 is unique only in the motor mount area.
