Coolant Filter Cutting

I plan on installing a coolant filter set up this weekend. Just some thoughts on cutting open filters to inspect.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade. All aircraft mechanics have an oil filter cutter. It's a must have for all a/c mechanics. We inspect all oil filters after oil changes. We're looking for flakes of metal and larger, what we call "part numbers". Obviously you can't pull over to the shoulder in an aircraft. Health of aircraft engines are vital to life and pursuit of happiness for pilots and their passengers. <o></o>
Find a buddy that works on small aircraft or owns one and 9 out of 10 times him or his mechanic will gladly cut open your filter for free. Aircraft mechanics are very inquisitive and checking a coolant filter debris will peak their interest. "DO NOT USE A DRILL TO START A HOLE, DO NOT USE A HACKSAW." This will contaminate your inspection. After opening your filter it is recommended that you cut the filter media with a "CLEAN" serrated edge knife. (Old steak knife, not the ole ladies dinner ware) You can snip the crimped edge where the ends come together with CLEAN tin snips.

My $0.02 worth.

Good information, I use a filter cutter to open them I had from racing, works well. Speedway Motors, Jegs or Summit will carry them.

Thanks, I was planning on just using the sawzall.....But yea that would probably create extra metal flakes and mess up your inspection.
