Glove box insert?

Has anyone come up with a better idea than the horrid cardboard? I thought about a wooden box or even a small plastic trash can.

For my 49 I made one out of thin sheet metal. I drew out a basic box shape, cut it out, folded it up, soldered the joints and viola....

Its not too bad to do

What's wrong with the cardboard? I put one in my 48 and it worked fine so I bought one for my 49...think I paid about 17 bucks for it. I don't think you could make one cheaper considering your time.

I plan on putting my radio in the glovebox - did you save any measurements of what you did?
I'd like not to have any sharp edged inside (obvious reason), all the wires from the radio protected (short out the radio tossing the manual or map in there casually), etc - so I am curious how you mated to the rounded front edge, and supported, etc. basically if anyone has plans I would love to 'borrow' them

Just paint the card board glovebox with activated polyester resin. If you really want it bulletproof put one layer of glass cloth on the outside while the resin is still wet from the first application. You will have a super strong fiberglass glovebox that will outlast the truck.

go to your army surplus or find an old ammo can, remove the lid and drill a couple holes for the hinge bolts to hold it on, may need some slight trimming for best fit though.

it's flimsey and falls apart after a few years, remember I have a 3 1/2 year old grandson who would probably destroy it.

Anyone have the dimensions or template for the '53 glove box liner? I have a roll of that thin trim aluminum I can cut, bend, and rivet. Lord knows I've been told I have way too much time on my hands so I might as well make a glove box.

I am making one out of sheet metal just to look good when the box is opened. Mine is shortened because I have an a/c unit behind it. Everybody knows that problem. It has sides, back and bottom and no top. I had to make the bottom and sides with one piece and fold them to get them in the hole from the front. Then I had to slide the back behind it and use screws to secure the back to the sides. When I get it painted and reinstalled I will post a picture. This is what you see now when you open the door. Not a pretty picture.

7C-8106010 .. 1948/52 Glove Box Liner-Cardboard / Listed in Carpenter's 1948/56 truck catalog on page 91: $25.00.

How long did the original last...10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 years?

I'm almost 100 percent sure my 49 still has it's original. That farmer worked my truck to death, but he tried to take care of it. It is pretty tough actually. I would actually like to confirm that if somebody has a picture of an original. It dips down somewhat in the middle and kind of forms a well.

THAT is an excellent idea. I also need to replace my wilting glove box. I will be buying a cheap cardboard glove box, and reinforcing it with fiberglass is going to be easy and cheap! Thanks! I never thought of that.
