Other than sound, I wouldn't think so. I ran the Walker BTM way back when, and IIRC it was a straight threw design. That being said, either would flow better than the stock muffler.
I had a 4" straight exhaust on the '99 for 2 years, it sounded good until you climbed hills then the drone was extreme. I put a BTM on it 2 years ago and it helped alot with out quieting the turbo-whistle to much.
Before I installed my 4" system, I had a BTM on the stock system, and also ran a straight pipe for a short while. The BTM made a fairly big difference in sound over the stock muffler. Nice rumble off the line and I could hear the turbo spool up. At highway speeds, it wasn't much different than stock. When I took it off and ran the stock system straight piped, it was a bit louder over all. Plus, I got a bit of a drone at highway speeds. Sounded pretty good though.
Either way, I can't say for sure if I had any performance or mpg gains though. It seemed like it the pedal was more responsive. Since I didn't have my gauges in yet, I don't know the effect it had on the EGT. But judging by the look of the completely restrictive stock muffler, it had to drop by a decent amount.
Once I installed the 4" MBRP system though, the power and mpg gains were noticeable. Small, but noticeable. I have the system with their muffler and it has a nice rumble to it with a very audible turbo whistle. With the muffler it is very reasonable at highway speeds.
My truck had a magnaflow straight threw muffler on it with stock pipe infront of that (no cat) with a 45* where it came out infront of the rear tire, it sounded good I liked it.
I put a 4'' turbo back on it and WOW I knew a difference right away. Ill admit that it sounds like s*** any time other than when Im on it hard! It sounds awesome!! Good enough that Ill leave a muffler off lol, turbo whistle is just a nice
If I were towing it would get old fast
I have noisy big wide tires and a loud exhaust, the way I look at it is I can hear my hard earned money working the way it should.
My opinion may not be relivant because I changed out the down pipe and all with 4'' but I thought maybe someone might want to hear my opinion.
Living in California dont you have strict regulations about not running a muffler?
got a 3.5" stright pipe on mine. a few weeks ago i was towing 11,000lbs and hauling 2,000. combined 24,000lbs. when i was getting on the interstate, there was a car that was going to pass me on the ramp, i had it floored and they musta got scared once they heard the truck making so much god d*** noise. they were even on the left side, my exhaust is on the right.
Not sure what i was after, asking the question. More or less, if the $75.00 investment would be good/benefit, over the straight pipe. Considering though, come next July when truck needs smogged, i probably should have something there where the stock muffler, used to be.
I've had mine straight piped for 4 years now and will be getting something to cut down the noise soon. Its gotten to the point where I'm tired of the noise and I'm sure the neighbors are too, especially when I come up the hill to my place! My brother just put a resonator on his 5.9 and it quieted down a bit, but didn't do anything to the power, so thats probably what I'm gonna try. They're around 80 at Napa and are straight through like a glass pack.

That sums it up right there. I have to install the 4" MBRP muffler on my system so that I dont get bagged with out it. I have already been "warned" to make sure it goes on.

In Mass? I haven't gotten any crap for my straight pipes, even with the 140 aggressive tune I haven't gotten pulled over for sound. Maybe they just think it's another jet taking off at Hanscom AFB.
Now lift and tints they do care about.....truck doesn't see much action any more now that I have the TDI Jetta.
The only problem I have with mine is that for no more use than it has, it is rattling on the inside. VERY ANNOYING! I kind of wish I would have straight piped it and tried that first, but in your case you probably need something on there. It sure did sound good until something came loose. I remember posting up right after getting it and talking about how great it was to hear the truck with the windows down and driving by a wall on the interstate.
