I have an 88 302 with EFI, and have had this issue for the last 3 months. She will start every couple of days, full cranking power and starts right up. After the initial start, it does not start again. ( at least for 2 days)
the symptoms i get when it does not start is either a bad battery, ( slow cranking wa....wa....wa). then I can wait an hour go back out and it will act like a bad fuel pump, where i get full cranking power but it will not fire.
I am thinking it is electrical with the fuel pump, is there a way to bench test or test the fuel pump?
I have already had starter, battery, altenator bench tested, all are good, solenoid has been replaced, as well as repaired the fuseable link.
Ideas please it is not my daily driver but miss driving her very much, great machine when she is working right! Thank you for your time.
When you turn the key to on, listen for the fuel pump to be running. It runs for just a couple of seconds. If you cycle the key from off to run a few times before starting, that will help pressurize the fuel system. If this helps it start, you could have a fuel pump/filter/pressure regulator problem.
i will have to verify battery voltage during each symptom, but have replaced the ignition switch, and terminals have been cleaned as well as the ground, it is grounded to the Frame of the truck not body, but frame i wire brushed to clean metal then attached. both positive and negative battery cables have been replaced as well.
Yes it has both in tank and frame mounted fuel pumps, but that is good advice I will try pulling the fuel pump fuse and see if that get my crank speed back to normal when experiencing that issue! That never crossed my mind! Thanks
