Pin pushes out, usually I use a drift punch. Handle is a slip fit, doesn't screw in like turn signal lever.

Hi Tom,
& welcome to the forum. Lotta good guys n gals here: friendly, helpful.
Why do you want to do this (having a problem? what is it)?

Not sure if you're talkin bout the gear selector/shift collar area or not.
After about 25 posts U can post a pic of the area in question. Many of these ol timers have been converted to hurst on the floor shifters so I'm not clear on the Q or the operation (entirely) of an original set of linkage. I would imagine a drift pin of some sort and a hammer could drive it out. I'd spray some PB Blaster in there, wiggle things (may B spray again), wait for it to penetrate a bit, and drive it out? There's a ball on the end (IIRC, not screwed) that engages the rest of the linkage for selection of gear. The 'grommet" simply takes up the 'slack' of movin around in the shift collar.

"...Worth the effort..."
sure, depending on Y 4 U wanna

Keep talkin, let us know any other Qs or how this turns out.

Chicken!
No, I'm just ribbin ya. You're lucky, most a these ol girls R so sloppy there we replace them w/the floor shift. Do U have a V8? The Hurst is made 4 em.
Lotta sm, fragel prts in the column (tin shift tube, tabs, etc) so not easy wrk. But removin the handle is easy. Nuttin will break if U use my method (gfw's as well). Love 2 have mine back up there. 28 yrs ago when I bought it PO had put in the Hurst (quite the thing back then). But he put it in "upside down" so the pattern is reversed (R, 1st, 3rd, 2nd). Wrks 4 me!

BTW: just wanna wrk on it cuz a the loss of the 'gromet"? no other probs?

Oh, wait a sec, what wuz I thinkin? Got the auto. & man mixed up.
Still all holds true cept for the shift tube etc inside the column. Auto has so many fewer prts. Not much of a project
