I've been having trouble starting it and I thought it was my fuel system. This morning when I tried to start her up all I got was a clunk. Checked the Batts, both over 12.5 so I tried using a jump wire on the solenoid switch and got nothing. When I started dismounting the solenoid the GP controller started clicking so I went and got a new one. That's on and still nothing. I tried jumping the starter to the frame and got showered in sparks but nothing else.
Is there anything else to look at? I'm still learning diesel and need help from the obi wans on this site.
changing the GP solienoid was probably unnecessary it will stay on for 10-15 seconds and then go through a series of clicks (on and off) because they have already ran there cycle and heated the cylinders and want to keep them to that temp but don't need to be on constantly to do that
When you say you jumped starter to frame....you're talking the large battery cable post on the starter solenoid at the starter? The sparks are because your fender solenoid is supplying power to that terminal. If there's power there, then either the solenoid on the starter, or the starter itself, is toasted. Pull it, and test it to confirm, but be prepared to replace or rebuild it.
Sounds like what happened to me this summer. Had a few times where it seemed like the battery was low (slow turning over), but other times it was fine. A few times it just clicked, but a second or two later would turn over fine.
Then one day after driving over an hour and taking a quick stop, it wouldn't start. Tried jumping it, didn't turn any faster, batteries had plenty of voltage.
Swapped out the starter with the one on my spare engine and couldn't believe how much faster it turned over.
In summary... replace the starter. Just remember to disconnect the batteries first. You don't want to weld a wrench to the frame if you slip.
