Replace E40D with Mechanical Automatic
Yesterday was the 34th anniversary of the infamous "winter hurricane" that paralyzed most of the state of Ohio. The weather went from mild wind with rain, to hurricane force winds, to ice, to drifts that closed most of the intercity roads in the state for days & even buried a semi-truck with its driver for 124 hours. That trucker had a CB but no one responded to his calls for help before his truck battery died. Perhaps if he had been able to use a cell phone, he wouldn't have been buried as long as he was. I knew a nurse who was stranded for days on her farm with her husband & pregnant daughter, with no electricity and almost no heat. They did have food & water. The daughter went into labor & had a healthy baby girl. The stress of the cold, however, induced a post-partum infection in the daughter. By then word had gotten to the National Guard, who flew the sick woman out to a hospital where she had an emergency hysterectomy. The baby, however, did fine. Hospital personnel & supplies in many parts of Ohio had to be either flown in or conveyed by snowmobile, nothing else could move.
About 51 people died in Ohio due to this storm.
At the time I lived in Akron, which somehow continued to function at a low level. The mayor had the foresight to ban unnecessary private vehicular traffic in the city, in order to keep the streets clear for public buses and public service vehicles. This did work very well: many people were able to get to work or to get groceries using public transportation. Had they attempted to drive anywhere, they would have simply clogged the streets and accomplished nothing. Fire trucks were able to respond. The morning after the storm, I rode the bus to my work at a hospital & got there on time, as did most of the staff.
I've been researching my family tree & history for over 10 years. I've found relatives prior to 1912 who died of kidney stones, died of heat stroke, drowned after they fell out of canoes or when their steamship sank in a storm. I found several who died young, of TB. A few died of smallpox. Lots of them died of pneumonia.
Civilization is a mixed blessing, and its blessings more fragile than we usually acknowledge.

[quote='94IDITurbo7.3;10830235]i know that you said not to tell you to leave the E4OD in place but why do you want to get rid of it? just want to or are you having problems?
If you are having problems with it tell us and we might be able to help.
Hey there. Just joined earlier today and have been very impressed at the level of information and assistance you all provide. Excellent resource for sure. Hoping to learn a bit from you all.
As the name implies I have a 90 7.3 with the E40D. This tranny, my second in under 100k miles, has a mind of its own whenever it sees fit, meaning that on occasion it hangs up at 1600 to 1700 rpm and eventually fixes itself. Duration can be 15 minutes to 3 days thus far. Have returned it about 8 times for re-adjustment in 2.5 years and quite honestly have no understanding of what would be intermittently causing such a problem. My guy simply says he is " resetting the module" . I would really like to learn and understand before I fry this one and would appreciate whatever solid knowledge you could throw my way, or send me in a direction that a tranny dummy can understand.
It just happened over the weekend again and a 5 minute ride on the interstate turned into over an hour complete with police escort off the roadway.
Today the truck is fine.
