it's the PCB based electronics that get damaged by an EMP. Circuits like the the FSS and the starter will survive the effects of an EMP. I've currently got a C6 setup but will be switching to an E4OD in the near future. Should that day come where an EMP strikes, I believe an E4OD will still manage to limp home without the controller (likely not good for it). But at that point I'll just put my C6 back in as it'd only take a few hours to swap in. However should that day come, things will be so messed up I think priority 1 for me will be hooking the tractors back up to the farm implements and becoming self-sufficient off our land heh. We can heat with wood and we have a natural spring-fed creek on the property, so our main worry would only be food. While it'd be a painful and quick transition to living 'off grid' (I'm addicted to my internets hah) it wouldn't be impossible. Right now I figure lifes to short to spend that much time worrying about something that may or may not happen. - and as stated, we've always got our tractors to get somewhere. Not the fastest, but it'd be among the only things left moving!
*edit* Speaking of which, it'd be pretty hard on the real big farms with all the newer computerized equipment. It'd be a revival of the small farmer with all the old mechanical stuff stuck together with fence wire and bail twine!
As I understand the AOD is the non-computer controlled 'version' of the E40D. Is that an accurate statement, and is replacing the E40D with an AOD an option?
Also, an earlier post says the E40D has a 'limp home' mode that includes 2nd gear, overdrive, and reverse. Is that correct?
AOD is not an option. Was never made with the diesel bellhousing and anyway without a serious build would not handle the torque.
Yes with no electrical connections operational, the E4OD will give you 2nd and OD and reverse in purely mechanical mode.
I wish now i had not asked why you wanted to have a mechanical a/t.
Yes, it's a 'Mad Max' scenario for sure. I have to admit that it was one of the reasons that I was looking for an IDI as well.
The problem is in this scenario, if you're driving the only running vehicle in your area and a group of armed individuals blocks your path, you won't be keeping it very long anyways (and hopefully will escape with your life). Not as much of an issue if you are way out in the sticks somewhere.
Other than a diesel, if you have a non-computer-controlled rig from the 1970s (or into the 80s for trucks), you can keep spare electronic modules (voltage regulator, ignition module, etc) tightly sealed in aluminum foil which should spare them from damage in the event of an EMP event. On a diesel you will need to do this with your alternator's voltage regulator and glow plug controller (if you want to keep using it, otherwise rewire with a switch or button).

Maybe he has that covered with a hood mounted machine gun. It worked for the mythbusters.
you are planning for december 21, 2012? or any other time that the world may end?
I'm not planning on any given date. The problem is, you just can't predict crazy. There are a lot of people out there who want to see the US go away, and we live in an age when missiles, nuclear materials and so on, are available to the highest bidder, with no background check required!
How many of us thought that 9-11 would ever happen? What does the next 9-11 type event look like? Why am I thinking about this stuff right before bed????
However, it's not the EMP or other disaster that will be most likely to kill you, it's going to be another human being. After a few weeks of no food and no luxuries like electricity, people are going to flip. Hell, they may even start stealing and killing as soon as they find out there is a breakdown in the justice system. WROL is what will get ya' if you aren't prepared. The best thing to do is get as far away from people as possible and he'll need a working vehicle for that.
eatont9999 is right. The general philosophy is that you have two nights to get where you want to be, after a catastrophe that terminates food transport and communications. The third night, you are where you will be. So, since I'm in North Texas, I will get over a Natural Barrier from the 6.5 million crazy-hungry people (The Red River), and it is wise to have a place to go there, and it is wise to know the people where you are going, and it is wise to have supplies prepared. To quote a line towards the end of the book 'One Second After' referenced earlier in this topic, "If food cannot be transported, the population will shrink to a level the land around it can support." And there's nothing on this planet more dangerous than a hungry human being. Shrink, indeed...
