Insulation options
Insulation options
Redoing floor and carpet in my truck! Wondering options on thermal and sound insulation and dont want to spend an arm and a leg! Been doing a little research on this and not sure which route I want to go! Anybody have any advice on cheap alternatives for insulation?
2x on lots of options. Heres' my $0.02.
LizardSkin comes in two forms - sound control and heat control. You'll need both from the sounds of it. Personally, my first choice - kind of expensive but it's a DIY system.
Bedliner? Anyone of the types that are laid on thick (like Line-X) will also provide the needed mass to dampen sound. . If I had access to it, this would be my top choice. The roll-on types are not any good for sound insulation
Dynamat (or equivalent) will insulate for sound by providing the panels with more mass. Systemwise, then there's Dynaliner and Dynapad. Jeg's, Summit, and others sell their own house brands. It's pricey but a box or two goes a long way if it's only sound control you're after.
Jute: It's the factory stuff that looks like a heavy tar/rubber floor mat. It typically only covers selected portions so it is not 100 percent coverage like LizardSkin or a bedliner material. Plus, it lacks full contact since it's only laid on top of the sheetmetal. Still gonna need to do the doors, back of cab, and firewall.
Insulation padding with reflective foil on one side: I see this stuff at swap meets for like $25 for a 25 sq.ft. roll. Works pretty good although it's really thick. Btw, the foil side goes towards the heat source. The bad part about this stuff is that it takes a loooong time to dry if it ever gets wet... and if it never dries is a good place to harbor mold and all sorts of nasty smelling stuff.

Ok so with this lizard skin how much of each product to do a single cab from firewall up the back wall just to the bottom of the rear window? Will a gallon of each be enough? And will it stick to the por15 or does it need to adhere to steel
It'll stick to POR-15.
Here's the catch, each product (sound control & heat control) only comes in 2 ga. buckets for about $160 each plus you'll want to get their $80 sprayer. Each bucket does about 50 square feet.
On the other hand, a Jeg's-branded "Dynamat" kit costs $170 but is less hassle cuz it's peel-and-stick.
Each product has its trade-offs.
