My C6 has been leaking all summer and it is starting to get worse. I know it is leaking from the bellhousing and possibly from the pan gasket but it seems to drive completely fine. The previous owner stated the motor was rebuilt about 5k miles ago but not the transmission, so I am thinking of having it done to keep it running strong. I use the truck as a daily driver and tow with it occasionally.
I have been researching on here and it seems people have paid a range of $300 to $900-1000 to get their C6's rebuilt. I have the capability to attempt it myself, but don't have the time.
While I have it at a tranny shop, is there anything else I should have them do to it while it is out? Again, I use it as a work truck (currently) but in the future it will probably get turned into my offroader. I just want to get a strong operating transmission back that won't need worked on again for awhile.
Just shy of halfway down the page note the wide ratio/low drag parts that will lower 1st and 2nd gear and reduce drag. It's not free or cheap, but depending on what axle ratio you want to run, it could be of interest.
I just took it to the only tranny shop in town (besides AAMCO) and they charge a $75 diagnostic fee. He didn't even come look, but was guessing front seal and new torque converter, and said something must have caused the front seal to fail. So $1000. Then he said a rebuild is around $15-1700. I am actually going to take it to AAMCO just to see their price even though I really don't want them working on it.
Yep that's what I told them. I heard they were a little pricy but that seems out of line.
I may just ask them to replace whatever seals they can without removing it from the vehicle and hope that will take care of the issue. I think it just needs a front seal and probably pan gasket.
Ask them what you get for that price. I'll bet you won't get 5 forward clutches, 4 high reverse clutches, hd band, F shift lever, R servo, oiling mods, shift kit, aftermarket hp t.c. etc.
I'll have them give me a line item estimate.
After looking around the internet, with their high prices I might as well just buy a new transmission. If that's the case I will come back here and ask for advice again to make sure I buy something of quality.
If I was going to rebuild it myself, what brands should I use/stay away from?
