I got my '82 F-250 in the shop with the C6 and Tcase and everything else included. They gave me a price of $1850 to rebuild everything (excluding the t-case) and put on. What do you guys think of the cost?
I think they think that they are going to make a lot of money on you. In my opinion it is too much. I would get a second and perhaps third estimate as well. A good quatlity rebuilt c-6 costs somewhere around 600 bucks, a new torque converter - about a 100, perhaps a little more or a little less depending on the vendor. In your truck you can change one out and have the rebuild back in pretty easily in a morning before lunch with the right tools. They just aren't that hard to do. I would say between 1200-1300 dollars is more fair price. They are basically charging you somewhere around 1200 dollars for the labor for a job that doesn't even take a day to do. I would ask them the cost of the tranmission rebuilt, the cost of the "other" parts, their shop rate (law says it must be posted in most states), and how many hours they are going to charge you for this job. After, that, I would call around and see what the other guys charge in your area. You'd be surprised at the different quotes that you get.
I rebuilt my C4 automatic for less than $400 including a new stock torque converter, which is not very different from the C6. This was the first time I had ever rebuilt an automatic transmission and I found it quite rewarding. I purchased a couple of books on rebuilding these transmissions and was able to put it together over a long weekend. They also sell DVD's/VHS videos on the rebuild process of these trannys.
The rebuild videos from Technical Video are excellent. I rebuild my C4 for 128 with converter. My C6 was about 150. Not too difficult, very straight forward.
I've rebuilt bunches of transmisions. They are not that hard to do if you take your time and are willing to make or buy some specialty tools. Going out on a limb here...I'd rather rebuild a any automatic than I would most manuals...Especially the 4500- too many gears to put in the toaster oven. Almost every time I do one I get my glove stuck between second and third gear and have to pull it off again.......
If you send it out for rebuild, ask around about the shops. A tranny that lasts and works well is way better than a cheap one.
I would do it myself if you have the time. I've read a forum on here that someone was walked thru the rebuild in the forum and with pictures. it was a c6 also. You would still come out ahead even if you had to buy some tools.
I'm about to have mine rebuilt/beefed up (torque converter, shift kit, and kevlar bands) for $700 if I pull it from the truck. They said $1000 if I bring them the truck.

The most important thing to do is KEEP IT CLEAN during assy.
There are a few things like additional roller bearings etc you can install to make the C6 more efficient also.
