Stock Steering Gear

So I bought a Toyota PS gear and as I re-read the instructions for doing the conversion it talks about cutting the steering column from the stock steering gear.

However, my stock steering gear has basically no play, any movement of the wheel is instantly communicated to the steering gear output shaft.

Does the cutting required in the conversion render the stock steering gear useless so that it couldn't be used by another person that wants to replace their worn out stock gear?

Just want to verify so I can decide whether I should sell/swap the original box and use a different steering column or just cut the one I have.

Thanks!

Cutting the steering shaft does effectively render the box useless. The steering gear and shaft is all one piece, and those parts are getting increasingly hard to find in good condition. I would say your box intact has more value to someone needing one, than it does to the junk man. Perhaps you might consider using an aftermarket column instead. It would be easier to make work, and you could also add the option of tilt wheel, having built in turn signals, ignition switch, etc., like a modern vehicle.

Great thanks! Thats exactly what I wanted to know. I'm doing an updated resto but I don't see the value in destroying hard to find parts when there are likely other alternatives.

Am I understanding that you'd be wanting to use the stock column and wheel grafted to the Toyota box? If that's the plan, I agree that cutting your good column is a waste of a valuable unit. You see them on eBay go for real money.

I, however, parted out a bare chassis not long ago where the p.o. had torched the column off rather than disassemble the thing correctly while removing the cab. If that upper column would work for you you're welcome to it since it's not good for much else. I've disassembled the box to see if I could use it for parts on another rebuild. If I'm understanding this right, I can imagine that it might matter where the column was cut off at, but I can check measurements if it's an option for you. Stu

Thats actually exactly what I'd be looking for. I want to keep the interior/exterior as close to stock as possible, and I'm rather fond of the simplicity of the stock steering column. I was just googling trying to find vendors for a "new" original style column.

As far as how long the shaft has to be I don't know. The article says to cut it off at the box and then shorten to the length specifiec in the bracket instructions.

Maybe someone that has done this to thir truck remembers.

I have the toyota gear, but not the mount yet.

As I've thought about it, if the guy cut this thing off too short to use as is you could have the inner column welded back together then cut it to the length you'd need. Same with the outer sleeve. Dress up the weld and you'd never know it'd been fixed. If you want the pieces they're yours. Just cover shipping. Let me know. Stu

Ok, I'll keep it in mind as I search. I appreciate the offer. Thanks!

Hey JB,
I like your plan of keeping the stock look - Just as a point of reference I replaced all my steering this summer. A 30 inch replacement ididit column knockoff was $350, another $250 for a 50's style steering wheel, $100 for a couple of Borgeson joints, a chrome horn button, drop column,...
That steering stuff is pricey - $600 min.. The original stuff looks great in comparison.

I would get the column from truck dog and fix it. Even used worn out columns are pricey. Here was my fix.....
