So i was just reading through a thread and they were talking about how some guys put swithches on the the gpr so they dont have to wait for them in the summer. Does this mean that i am damaging my gp's when i do not wait for the light at all just hop in and crank it up, im still used to my 1st gen cummins....
Nope. No damage done. The WTS light is just a dummy light that the PCM turns on and off as it sees fit. The glow plugs can actually be on for up to two minutes after the key is turned on and I know that mine continue to run after the engine has started. The point of that switch you mention is that guys can disable the Glow Plugs from coming on after the engine has already been started (think of running several short errands), or when the weather is warm and thus, supposedly extending the life of the Glow plugs because they aren't turned on every time you turn the key (even though they aren't needed). The PCM looks at engine oil temperature and activates the glow plug relay when the EOT is below a set threshold (I believe 140 degrees).
That is a long answer to your short question, but a short answer is No, you are not hurting anything. As long as the engine is warm and starts easily, there is no reason to wait for the WTS light to go out.
Edit: Just out of curiosity, how do you like the 7.3 versus the 1st gen Cummins?
Hey thanks! Well to answer your question i love the obs super cab and ride of the Ford
versus my reg cab dodge. I like the dodge d60 front axle but i can do that to the stroker. I love the 12 valve there is no beating it! It starts very good at below freezing temps with no hessitation, gets great fuel economy, and is very simple to work on. But i am also a proud owner of the 7.3 so i have to like it too. I love the sound of the straight pipe, like the torque it has, and i like the way the zf shifts over my dodge's Getrag. All in all they are both very good rigs and i have big plans for both. The Ford is going to be my go to town pu, the dodge is gonna be my wood getter and goosekneck hauler.
