New here with glow plug question

I recently got a 87 Ford f250 6.9 IDI. I've never had a ford but have had plenty of diesels, I'm mainly a cummins guy but couldn't pass up this truck. It only has 40k miles and is in very good condition. Anyway, I bypassed the glow pug system with a push button setup. I've read that you can burn up the plugs doing this and to only use them around 5 seconds at a time. I've done some searching and have gotten mixed messages. Any help appreciated.

Thanks

When I had this set up on an '85 I would hold the button around a count of 15. When you use the key switch your light times out in about 10-15 seconds I think, but the relay stays energizes 1 1/2-2 min.

No, they don't stay on for minutes. The wait to start light comes on with the plugs for 10-15 seconds, then the wait to start light goes out (at which point you should start it), and the controller cycles the plugs on & off for another few seconds to help keep it running. After that, they're off. Watch the volt meter, and you can see the voltage drop when the plugs are energized...

I can hear my '86 click off and the light goes out in about 12 seconds at 29 degrees outside. I just went and started it to see and she hasn't been started this week at all.

Won't argue, but use a hand held volt meter at the relay and it stays on a bit longer. IDI or DI.

Don't argue then. 10-15 seconds, then about 2 seconds on and 2 seconds off for 20-30 seconds after it starts to help it warm up a bit faster.

Anything longer than 10-15 seconds constant on will start burning out plugs.

Sorry, I should re-phrase that...

They're not supposed to stay on for minutes...

Thinking back to my farm boy days...When the mercury was above freezing, I held the glow plug switch for a 10-second count before cranking. When it was below zero, a 15-second count usually did the trick.
