I'd like to leave a note here, about how the glow plugs are working on my 2002 7.3.
When its -20, i've been waiting for the light to go out, and start cranking.
After hearing a story, about some dodge guy leaving his plugs on for 15 minutes, i thought i'd leave the key in the run position for a full minute and see what happens...
Guess what, the truck started like it was summer!
I cant remember reading or hearing anywhere that the plugs stay on after the light, although i knew that they cycled after starting, but i thought the engine would have to be running to initiate that.....
I added a LED to my pillar pod this weekend when I installed my gauges. You'd be surprised at how your GP's actually work. Apparently the WTS light is just set-up on a timer no matter what the conditions it does the same thing everytime. Your GPR is definitely not set-up this way, once the temp is warm enough or your motor is warm enough, the GP's don't even come on, but your WTS light does. That little LED taught me allot.
You can also tell when the GPR kicks off by a digital volt meter . When the voltage (usual runs around 10 - 11 volts) jumps up to about 13 -14 volts after a couple of minutes from a cold start is when your gpr kicks off.. I have digital voltage meter on bought on the internet that just plugs into the cigerette lighter..Here is a source link: http://www.cetsolar.com/voltmeter.htm
I just leave it plugged in all the time.. it does not draw any current to worry about..

Mine doesn't buzz, at least not louder than the fuel pump. I am planning on that handy-dandy LED, though -- that was a really good idea!! Who came up with this originally?? Whoever it was -- thanks!!
Thanks, Ron. I remember that thread now that you say that... If you DO hear a buzz, keep an eye on it -- it could be on its way out. Of course, it may buzz for years without failing, too. I've seen (okay, HEARD) relays like that before that never failed for all I know.
WMRiceman started the thread i posted..i take it he was the first...my truck is parked in my shop and i never hear a buzz ether....
I had already done this on my Dad's truck (1990) when I was fighting his glow-plug situation and had to install a manual push button for him. It was what I used as the ON indicator for him.
I am real curious about just how much the plugs are used on my truck compared to others. It's hot 99.9% if the time here where I live. I know when changing/testing the GPR, it would energize momentarily, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's all.
I am going to have to do this as I am in need of another project. AFFORDABLE one too, due to XMAS .
