A friend has a 2001 V10 spit a plug at around 170,000 miles. Took it to a mechanic who we know and trust to have it repaired about $170 to tap and install an insert. Asked him how often he has seen the problem and what brand vehicles, he told us pretty much had seen it happen in anything with alum heads, if installed improperly or not maintained. But that there were some years of fords that seemed to have more occurences than others. As for a Power stroke diesel out towing a V10, a V10 will tow anything a Power stroke will, maybe not as fast, and it will burn more fuel, but it will tow it.
I almost hate to jump in but... This is my first V10. I have owned nothing but diesels. I love diesels. You cannot beat the power to economy ratio. I bought the V10 and it pulls ok but it cannot touch what my previous diesels had to include my 97PSD. I do like my V10. It is a blast to drive and sounds way cooler than a Viper!
I bought this truck purely for economic reasons. Price of a V10 vs Diesel, maintenance cost and insurance cost. I was able to trade my diesel, get this V10, a small car and cash in hand. Yes, I know the diesel has a higher resale. It came to what my operational cost are per month. I am a recreational tower and the truck sits 95% of the time.
If there is someone out there that has a low mileage diesel with a manual transmission and it is not beat to death, I will trade you my V10 straight up.
With all this said...gas or diesel, Ford makes a damn good truck.
Like many of you, I love my '99 V-10.....when it's running good. I've had two plugs blow out. The first was all the way in the back on the passenger side. go figure! I bought a repair kit from Snap-On for about $500. Essentially a tap and heli-coil kit. The second was right in the front...lucky me. I also see broken manifold studs, but I'll pay someone fro that repair. Right now my truck is sputtering and surging and driving me nuts. Changed Fuel filter, plugs and coils, EGR, Position sensor, IAC, and MAF.
[quote=LSchicago2;10806329] What about all the Vega's in the 70's that couldn't top 40,000 miles with the original engines?
I must be twice as lucky as others because my first car was 77 Vega and I sold it with 90,000 original miles on the motor and my 2001 V10 had the original plugs in them and were replaced at 140,000 miles with no issues.
I have had to replace the manifold studs however....

77 Vegas had the improved block introduced in 76. I was referring to the first Vega engines, the ones without cylinder liners. The pistons rode directly on the aluminum cylinder walls which caused the engine to be wore out @ 40,000 miles. Because of that, Gm redesigned the engine and offered a 5 year 60,000 mile warranty on the new version to regain the public's trust. . It was too late though, and 1977 was the last year for the Vega. That's why V8 swaps were so popular in the mid seventies. THere were tons of clean Vegas around with low miles and blown engines, and they usually sold for $50-200!
