the dodge is a photochop. you can see it below each tire and where the trailer goes over the bed.

HA! Now that I'm not looking at half asleep, I think I know how they did that.... Jack the trailer up high enough to get the truck underneath it, and then PhotoChop out the dunnage under the trailer...

Given that the pin weight on my double-drop is on the order of 6000 lbs, I thought something was amiss, but my sleep-fogged brain couldn't quite catch it...

Normally...

Normally I'm very calm and open minded about things I see on the internet, that said I can safely say that for the first time in several years I want to physically reach through my screen and choke the living "stupidity" out of each and very one of those fools. I am that angry .

If I could get this guys location I would call the local news station and see if they have a "problem solvers" team to investigate the sponsors dangerous and illegal business practices.

This thread and the Airstream forum is a realization of something that I have always said; there is a MAJOR difference between can and should.

CAN you tow a 28' trailer with a VW? Sure.

SHOULD you tow a 28' trailer with a VW? Well, to me the answer is simple. =)

To be fair, it appears it's just this one guy and several of his customers that are engaged in this lunacy. Looking through the tow vehicle section, it appears that most of the people there are towing with full size pickups, Excursions, or Suburbans.

Good point. I went so far as to do a search for canam rv in their search feature and there's plenty of people calling them out for unsafe practices.

The truly sad thing though is that there's people defending him and how he does things, yet these same people tow w/ proper vehicles. It's sad that a newbie might read all that and think, hey i can tow a 7,000lb trailer w/ a car. It sounds like everyone thinks he's a tow god b/c he throws around fancy words like torsion and suddenly he's a nobel winning physicist. Apparently this guy has even written articles for RV magazines!

Some of the comments just make me shudder. Here's some gems:

"How often do trailer brakes really fail?"
"A unibody vehicle is better for towing."
"Some over the road semis only have 250-350hp, why do we need anymore than that?" I can only assume they haven't heard of a little think called torque, not to mention gears and multiple speed transmissions.

I'm just thankful I live a LONG way from where he's located, just hope his customers don't decide to vacation in Kansas.

true, many of the people on that site are responsible tow

the part that bothers me is that I got banned for trolling when I was asking legitimate questions. Their forum is advocating this lunacy

Guys, it would be much appreciated if you would keep any discussion of this here at FTE. By registering on another site for the sole purpose of telling them what they're doing wrong is nothing more than trolling. Kind of like Chevy guys that come here and tell us we are wrong for driving a Ford. We try not to feed our trolls so don't become one of theirs.

A 20' trailer and Monty???? You'd need something like a 1972 Fiat 128 on 13" wheels.

If you leave Monty curbside, try this:

And here I was sweating trying to find a fiver around or under 10,500 dry weight so I could keep within my 20k GCWR. I might go back and look at those Alfa Golds or Cameos again.

I don't like seeing people getting hurt but it would have been hilarious if they fell over and the trailer ran both of them over.

OMG! I just spent some time reading some of the threads over there. The guy with the TDI Jetta I found very amusing.

I know in the "days of yor, when Men were Men, and...ahhh...that's another story" people towed with the family sedan all the time, but the family sedan had a big block 409 with plenty of power and torque, not to mention some big, nasty brakes, and the car weighed A LOT! My concern is that while you can pull with a lesser vehicle, I can't see a 2500lb car being able to control the "wind loading" of that trailer. I mean come on, you pull a 15-20' trailer with a small modern car and get hit by a gust of wind, the weight just isn't there to keep that trailer under control, sway bars or not. I call BS on the stability that this guy in canada that is setting these vehicles up is claiming.

Glad I don't live near him or his customers.
