I have a 1989 Ford F-Super Duty DRW with the 7.3 IDI Diesel, and I replaced the injection pump almost a month ago, now it will start, and run fine, then it will just, cut, no surging, no loping and no hesitation, just, DEAD, STOP.
I know the IP has 3 12v leads, fuel cut-off solenoid, High-Idle and the 3rd escapes me atm.
I am wondering if my ignition switch may be shorting out, it turns over fine, but it is NOT getting fuel after it cuts out, it may fire up for a second, then it will just die out again.
I'm trying desperately to sell this truck right now, and I have an interested party, but it needs to be running.
I don't have any diagnostic tools, and I cannot afford to have a diesel mechanic look at it.
I just want it running, so I can fix my car.
Any help is appreciated.
Edit: I also cannot get my ignition lock cylinder to line up, no matter what I do, my ACC doesn't even work, and it has always been a PITA to turn the key, really had to put some force onto it.
Run a jumper wire from the battery to the fuel shut off on the injection pump. Drive it around some. That will at least tell you if the fuel shut off is working properly. You'll have to pull the wire off to shut down.
it sounds like you have multiple problems. first off, i think the ignition switch may either be bad, or miss aligned. second, it sounds like the ignition actuator is either broken, or about to break.
neither repair is very expensive or hard to do, but the ignition actuator is time consuming to repair.
well, thank you for all for the help, I called 460/5 and he was able to help me find that I.....in the rush of the install of the new IP, put the wrong wires on the wrong solenoids, I was also able to get the ignition cylinder in.
It is now running strong, and disturbing the peace.
Thanks for letting us know what it was, that might help someone else out in the future. I'd say that would be a pretty easy mistake to make, and probably quite frustrating if you can't figure it out.
Hi,
saw a youtube video how to install an ignition switch, looked easy enough and our parts match the old ones but we can't get the lock cylinder in in the accessory mode. it goes in all the way once it gets to start, but then we can't turn the key...what am i doing so wrong on this simple fix?
