My old handheld Auto X-Ray has run out of updates for anything after 2002. Got a new laptop and wondering what would be a good PC based program to get?
The best laptop scanner that I know of for the money is AutoEnginuity with the Ford Enhancement license.
It won't allow you to upload engine programs though. The only thing that I could think of along those lines and also doing scanning is DashDAQ-PC, but you'll have to buy the mongoose seperate and those get quite expensive.
Leaning towards the AutoEnginuity. DashDaq-PC doesn't support Windows 7 64 bit and I don't understand pricing structure. Software is cheap, mongoose is ridiculous. Doesn't look like there is an option to just diagnose, and later upgrade to programming/reflash. Might give them a call.

If you have the pro or ultimate windows 7 you can run the virtual XP drive that's on the OS. Maybe even the XP compatibility mode of all the Win7 OS might be enough.

The virtual XP doesnt work all that well. Its an emulator, and thats it. Its not true windows XP.

It's like running Parallels on a mac to have Windowns boot up.
It depends on what industry you are using it in. Using it for Corel Draw, Roland equipment and/or my embroidery machines it works very well for software and/or plugins that aren't up to snuff for Win 7(especially for 64 bit).
