Some 400 questions

I've enjoyed reading the threads in this forum, it's about the only place that I can find any information about the 400 in my Galaxie. I have a remanufactured 400 bored .030 over with stock compression, decked, balanced and line honed with an aftermarket Melling cam with 204/214 duration at .050 lift(I guess it's a RV cam with around 260 total duration), Edelbrock Performer (non-egr) manifold and a 1406 Edel 600 cfm carb. I have dual exhaut with 21/4 diameter pipes and turbo mufflers as well.

I need to replace the carb, the throttle shaft is worn and visibly moves when I move the throttle and the idle won't stay where set it. The choke no longer works, and since I'm not working right now, the only carb I can afford is a rebuilt 4300 4 bbl, it's about $75 cheaper.

So, will the 4300 work on my Performer with that thin adapter plate? Do I need to re-jet the carb? And...what CFM is it? Would I see a mileage increase compared with the Edel carb?

The other question is that when the motor was put into my car, the mechanic used the stock valley pan intake gasket. I found out later when I got an edelbrock catalog that edelbrock specifically stated that they don't recommend the stock gasket and I should use aftermarket Fel-Pros. Why is that and should I get the manifold taken off and redone correctly?

Lastly, does anyone have an engine analyzer software program? I'd like to see how much hp and torque I have.

I think you can buy parts for your carb, or you can send to elderbrock for a rebuild either would be cheaper than a new carb.

The instructions I got with my E'brock Performer 400-EGR state specifically to use the OEM type gaskets as opposed to "race type" gaskets. The only difference was that they recommend using RTV instead of the end seals.

I do but need more info about your engine

1- actual comperssion
2- cam lift (example int. .467, ex. .500)
3- is your cam timed stright up or factory 4 degrees retarded
after I get that then I can tell you just about what your getting. I mostly need more info on your cam.

Some 400 questions

here is what I came up with,
cam-204, 214 @0.50
lift 493in, 502ex
600 cfm carb
8:1 compression
dual plane intake

406 ft lbs @2000 rpm
241 horsepower@4000 rpm

now that is with small tube headers with mufflers. Also your compression might be a little higher because the block was decked so this will give you a little understanding where you are. its a pretty good streetable set up to me.

Well, that's good news about the intake, I'll leave it alone. It doesn't leak or anything, I was just wondering about the long-term consequences, I paid a lot for my motor, don't wanna fry it too quickly!

I'll call Edelbrock's 800 number and see how much a rebuild is.

Those numbers sound great to me, after all, torque is the main factor in acceleration (0-60), horsepower determines how fast you can eventually go (i.e. top end speed). It feels MUCH stronger than when the motor was stock. The compression is 8.4 : 1 plus it's probably a little higher because of the decking and the heads being leveled/shaved so I figure it's somewhere near 8.75 or 9. The cam is timed straight up at 0. The lift specs are .493 int. and .502 exh. It doesn't have headers, but I could tell a big difference after I lost the stock muffler and single exhaust. The only headers I found are Hedman Huslers and they are pretty pricey, $484.32 plus shipping . I think the tube size is too big, it's 1 7/8 inches, and I'd bet they'd kill my low end power. I need to take the manifolds off and get in there with a grinder and smooth things out a little. I'm used to $100 headers, had them on my 69 F-100 and my Cougar and they worked just fine for me.
