my engine build up is nearly complete and I am now concerned with exhaust i have a 77 ranchero with a 400m and I have been unable to find any headers for under like 400 $ which would put my considerably over budget.
my question is could i use cleveland headers, theyre both 2bbl shouldn't it work?
my second question is could I just use headers for say a bronco or pick up truck?
The only ones that come to mind are the Hooker Super Comps. Are they way over $400, painted? I didn't price them, but gathered this info from their site. '72-up 351c Torino may fit, I can't say they won't.
Truck headers may not have enough ground clearance.
I have headers on my 400 and will reccomend that you get the coated ones. They will rust terribly if you don't. I haven't seen any paint that will stay put.
Starter heating may become a problem. It's when the heat from the headers causes the starter to drag. You can put some thermal wrap around the header and the starter and cover the starter with some gasket material(not cork) or sheet metal, then secure with large screw clamps(made like hose clamps).
Put some anti-sieze on the header gaskets. This will keep them from sticking if you have to remove them and seems to help with sealing. Also put some on the header bolts.
Headers are not NEEDED any way. You may can wait a little while and find the ones you really want. Run manifolds until you get them.
If you want Maximum flexability and minimum exhaust fabrication problems....My suggestion would be too either(1) run regular exhaust manifolds or(2) run Block hugger or shorty headers ...say from Sanderson's..they make the highest quality shorty's that are ceramic coated that are available thru the mail. I have a set on my 77 f250 , 4x4 and they fit great. The best thing to do is Just use your old exhaust manifilds....headers are a constant PIA....just like a girlfriend that is never happy....good luck.....fd
I was under the impression that not having headers would vastly decrease my power is there any way i can get that power by say modifing the stock manifolds or making my own headers?
I was going to suggest this also. When I looked into it a few years ago, they told me I could get 15-20% for flow out of the manifold but would cost $500. I wonder if the price is any better now.
Pipe is a different diameter than tubing so it won't fit the bender tight. A very slight bend maybe, but you'll never get a tight radius. The tubing will collapse easily if a mandrel bender isn't used. http://www.toolsforbending.com/mandrels2.html
You can buy the pre-bent tubing, exhaust port flanges, collectors, outlet flange, a lot of time and end up spending more than headers cost. I learn from the school of hard knocks.
YOU SHOULD TRY SANDERSON HEADERS IN SAN FRANCISCO, $285 FOR UNCOATED HEADERS YOU CAN USE SEVERAL COATS OF 1200 DEGREE PAINT TO COAT OR THE COATEDS SELL FOR 400.00 I THINK HOPE THIS HELPS!!
Please don't post in all CAPS. Thanks, The Mod.
