replace camshaft in 300?

replace camshaft in 300?
How would I determine if the camshaft needs to be replaced in my 75 300 IL6? I have ruled out just about every other possible cause of the stumble and surge in the engine. Today I took off the timing gear cover to check the gears are they are in really good shape. I'm thinking if the camshaft needs replacement, this would be the time to do it.
