Which is better, timken or sealed bearings for the rear axle?
I am adding my two cents....
I hate the conical roller (what you refer to as timken style) bearings that are lubed by axle oil. People say they are stronger, by at high stress the put a hell of a lot more stress on bearing retainer than the sealed ball design. And on a stock setup that is just sheet metal, which to me negates any advantages of load... to me they are weepy leakers and therefore junk..... go sealed ball with inner axle seals
I made a hybrid of this setup for my stang where I swap centers and axles often where I had a seal surface put on the axles.... it works for 28 and 31 spline axles because the axle shaft us the same diameter..... run inner axles seals and then pack the rollers in grease... which for me about kills the weepy leaks and makes is possible to swap axles without constantly pressing on and off seals because the seals get damaged usually in the process from my experience....
I would like to know what part for the big ball bearing is... the old bearing should have it stamped in it somewhere because it would be cheaper to run the sealed bearing....
