Truck displayed Cleaning DEF Filter...cool..20 minutes to work, and I just pulled onto the highway....Although this is the second time I've seen it in 300 miles....
Puzzling is, turbo was pulsing between 1-5 PSI of boost on two seperate instances, 3-7 pulses, turbo up, down, up down, about 1-2 second holds each time. Milage dropped down about 2 mph, cruise was on, and no head wind...
I saw this behavior this weekend traveling a couple hundred miles on I55. It only seemed to happen on cruise control. I didn't notice the Regen happening at the time, but it probably was, I don't pay attention to that anymore.
I've asked about this before as well. I have been told on this forum by one of the techs that answer questions that it is normal operation. It only happens on cruise. It seems to me that there needs to be a certain amount of engine load to make the turbo surge, it's as if it's caught between to settings and the truck can figure out what to do.
Usually I can get it surge at 105-110 (65-70) with a bit of a cross or head wind, or going up a hill. I've not noticed it to correspond with a regen, but I'll watch for that.
It will do this with the cruse on during active regen.
It does this in cycles. Some regens are worse than others.
Surge, normal, surge, normal, surge normal...etc.
I don't see any harm from it, it's just annoying.
I'm used to it but you'll get glances from new passengers after a few minutes.
When going up a hill around 40-45ish and rpms at 1100-1300 and back off throttle a slight bit, I get a whistle chirping noise in a surge format. regen is irrelevant and i can make it do it when i want to. will mention next service trip
I was looking for the same discussion, but I'm not sure my truck has the same problem because I never looked at the Turbo gage. I just notice that when I'm in cleaning mode that my truck starts to run rough when I am at a cruising speed and start to coast. I don't have to be in cruise control to have this problem. It is almost as if I'm driving down a bumpy road. Is this the same problem? Anyone else. BTW I have a 2011 6.7L. Thanks.
Could be....I don't know. Guess it's more noticable to me when my cruise was on...going uphill, pulling 1500 rpm's. It was only the 2nd regen since I got it, first one wasn't all that noticable except for the milage drop of 2-3 mpg. I'm getting regen's every 300 miles roughly when I'm not towing. So I'll take it off of cruise on the next one and see if your symptom sounds familar....
NO MOD BUG VACCINE AVAILABLE in my neck of the woods. Shortage I believe....dang. Now just need some time to put the bigger mods on.....my wife will be able to tell you how long they all take, because I believe she's timing how much time I spend working on it.....she wasn't happy with my first mudflap , and neither was I when the factory backing tabs broke in half on me.....hard to fit hand back up there to get the screw to hold them in....and my 5 year old helper couldn't hold it in one spot, even though his hands were the "right" size...
DEF = fluid (urea) misted in to the exhaust stream, combats Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emissions.
DPF = physical filter that traps soot/particulate matter and what is "burned out" in an active regen cycle (or enhanced by passive regen = no extra fuel, just running temps being high enough alone).
As to the pulsing - that's just what mine does too. That is all part of how these engines operate. Don't worry about it and enjoy the new ride!
