I have a 2001 F-350 SD 7.3 diesel.. I just had the tranny totally rebuilt due to it dieing on me. My question is that when I am driving and it shifts into the OD it then shifts right back out of OD into the towing gear. Iwas told that the PRNDL needs to be replaced. Has anyone heard this before? and second I can find info on the neutral safety switch but nothing on the PRNDL.. are they the same?
Welcome you have found the right place to get the help you need we have been through every thing these trucks can throw at us here! What your describing dosent sound kosher, when the tire size/ gear ratio is not correct they will hunt for o/d but it sounds like you may have a converter locking issue going on in sure some one else will jump in to lend some advice as well, you may want to edit your header to help tranny problems! It may get the right people some ford engineers ect. Good luck

Thanks.. the truck shifts great but will not stay in OD...If it is the TCU where can I get one that wont break the bank.. by the way the truck is lifted 8 in and has 35x12.50 tires..ran great till the tranny went and know the OD is the only issue......thanks
Have you had any correction done in your tuning yet I'm running 37.5's with my TS perf it shifts perfectly and speedo is dead on too! It is really important to have the correction made in the PCM at a minimum to set correct strategy or that tranny will not live very long!
I just had the tranny looked at and the mechanic says that it is shifting perfectly and looking for O/D. He is going to replace the Nuetral safety switch (PRNDL switch) and see if it was faulty. I need a good reprogrammer for the truck. Was thinking either the Hypertec or the buldog.. anyone use either and which one is better for fuel and towing?
The PRNDL is only an indicator it does not control anything.
Is the red indicator not registering the correct position when you put the transmission in a gear?
There is a adjusting wheel located on the underside of the column.
The bracket that holds the wheel can break and the pointer will not work properly.
I just fixed the bracket on my work truck last month.
The bracket is only available from the dealer if you buy the whole PRNDL set.
I fixed mine with some plastic epoxy and a couple of small sized zip ties.
The interlock switch is located on the transmission
It also does not control the shifting of the transmission.
It simply tells the circuits what the selected transmission position is.
Man! I love this site. In the last week and a half , I've fixed the non-operating remote door lock system by performing the 1 cent fix outlined in a different thread, have got my "Door Ajar" lights to finally work the way it they're supposed to, and now, you can bet, I'll be looking for a bracket problem with my PRNDL, besides saving a C**Pload of loot. Thanks guys, You are awesome!!
This is on my F-650 but is the same for all of the column shift vehicles that I know of.
Here is the adjustment wheel for the PRNDL indicator pointer.
It is located directly under the column.
The white bracket can break and the pointer will not align with the letters on the dash.
With the vehicle not running shift the column lever to L(Low).
Now you can disconnect the thin (red) cable (that moves the pointer) end loop, from the lever.
Then dismount the bracket from the column.
The bracket can be removed by rotating the wheel until the cable tube is free of the wheel.
Slide the cable out of the bracket and wheel.
Replace or repair the bracket.
Reinstall the bracket and cable.
Turn the wheel until the pointer is aligned with the appropriate letter to match the shift levers position.
Note; the least tension is on the cable when the shifter is in Low.
I then used a couple of zip ties to cinch up the bracket.
Wow Shorebird!! What a "Mickey Mouse" piece of s**t that bracket is. I realize that there's not much tension involved in moving the PRNDL indicator, but it sure gets moved a lot.
Of course the bracket was broken...glued it back together with JB Weld. That should hold it for a while. I will also support it with zip ties as you did. Otherwise I'll just have to take it apart again before too long.
Thank you for the photos, they made thing much easier for me.
