Hello, newbie needing help. I recently purchased a '95 7.3 crewcab. It has 86000 mi and as far as I can see from the documentation with the vehicle, the tranny has had regular maintenance. Here's my dilema, when the tranny is in overdrive and I let off the gas, it acts like it goes into neutral, the rpm's drop, then when you give gas again it jerks in gear. Also when shifting thru the gears, it gives a little shudder between 2nd and 3rd. Is the tranny about to give out on me or is this normal for this model? Could it be the shift solenoids? Hope someone has some experience with this.
Thanks
Randy
Welcome to FTE Randy, and I'll share my 0.02 worth of info. Does the o.d off light blink on and off? It sounds like you could have a seal leaking by in one of the clutch packs that might be causing the shudder between shifts, or you might have line pressure issues caused by the solenoid pack. There will be other guys answering this as well and they might know exactly whats wrong. Good luck. Casey
yup, sounds like the tc isnt locking up, does it do the idle bit at 65-70 as well? if so the tc isnt locking, it should throw a code, the 2-3 could be the tc or a clutch pack as diesel nut said, a quick scan for codes and a little pid data will tell the tale
Thanks for the replies, sorry it takes so long for me to get back. Only have internet at work and limited how much I can use.
I do not know if the od lite blinks, never noticed. I will check this wkend and get back Monday.
No it does not act like it is going into nuetral with od off but I think it still has the shudder. Will check this wkend.
It does it at any speed that it is in od. More noticeable at higher speeds because of the bigger difference in rpms
Randy
No check engine lites, will trouble codes still show up when scanned?

If you find out the TC is locking and jsut want to try to fix the shudder. change the tranny fluid with ATF+3. its a chrysler fluid but my dad and I have had great success with it fixing TC shudders on ford trucks. we have been doing this for over 10 years with no issues. I did it with my 95 when I got it. Never had a another shudder for the 40,000 miles that I had it.
well you should feel 4 "Shifts" 1 to 2, 2 to 3, torque converter lock up , then 3 to OD, The lockup is usually very close to the 2 to 3 shift so sometimes its hard to feel.
I think the TC is locking up, I thought I was imagining things, sometimes it seems as it it shifts 4 times. I have felt this with OD off and on. If the TC is locking up what would cause this nuetral phenomenon when I let off the gas?
The coast clutch isn't working I would say. I think they have snap ring issues that makes them not work correctly. i don't know alot about them so I am just guessing.
hey guys, been working too much and been out of town.
tjbeggs, What is a coast clutch? and is it fixable? I think the tc locks occasionally, because i have felt it shift 4 times, just doesn't do it all the time.
Dieselnut, no the lite does not blink on/off? any ideas?
cuda_jim, with od off it is just fine.
what next????????????
by the way, how do you post a pic of your ride, and the other info that comes up with your replies?

The coast clutch is what will keep some engine braking happening (engine won't go to idle when you let off in gear). Honestly I don't know alot about it but I have heard and read they have some issues. Maybe somebody else can speak to it for you.
