Banks Sidewinder Turbo | A Trip Back In Time; Trailer Life - March 1993 + pre-turbo install

Banks Sidewinder Turbo | Trailer Life - March 1993

this is a good read.

"The Sidewinder turbo test began with odometer at about 5000 miles, so the engine was fully broken in, yet still fresh................."

When I was at truck and jeep fest a few years ago I asked about a turbo for the idi, they actually had this article and another catalogs with products that 92 had and it showed its dyno numbers...let me look around for it

i just bought the sidewinder turbo from Jayme here,so i got curious if i could find some fuel economy reports and saw this.
another mpg could always be handy. though half again the power on top of things won't exactly make me cry either lol.

It was interesting to note they stated 15 mpg before and 16 mpg after installation of the Banks towing a 6k plus trailer. I get roughly 15-18 mpg empty but only 10 mpg with my trailer. I must have a problem. It runs great but I'm not impressed with the towing mileage.
Anyone have any suggestions and do any of you get that kind of mileage?
Tom

The Banks Sidewinder wastegated turbocharger carries an introductory price of $1999.50; the standard non-wastegated Sidewinder kit is offered for $1795.50. A 3-inch diameter exhaust system is available for $202.50; the optional 3 1/2-inch diameter lists for $269.50

Can't even get a 3'' exhaust for that price these days!

yeah, hanging around you guys is bad for my wallet.

OR,
good for it,depending on how ya look at it lol.
if i can push my average mpg up from the current 14.5 MPG to 15.5 MPG,i can save over $350 per year,or around $3500 (though i must subtract the cost of the turbo price of course from this) if i keep the truck for 10 more years........and that's if fuel remains @ 4$ per gallon.as the price of fuel goes up,the more that 1 mpg means and saves.
(based on my annual 20k miles per yr driven.)
plus enjoying 50% increase in power during the next 10 yrs............that's a nice little bonus lol.
i keep saying 10 yrs, though its already been almost 2.so who knows, maybe i'll just keep fixing the thing and retire with the old jalopy.

Great to hear!!! Finally you will experience the power. Ask any questions, I have suggestions for solving the oil drain tube grommet leak common to these systems, will get pics tomorrow.

what do i order in preparation for this?
i want to wrap the pipes like a million and a half times to help reduce turbo lag and quick spool right?
and how is the intercooler coming? i'll have to copy that next lol. whatever adds efficiency to the engine i want to do it.
im never going to use all this power seriously.i drive like a 90 yr old granny due to fuel prices.i'll probably set her up for like max 7 lbs of boost and call it good.

I forund a mostly complete non wastgated Banks kit on an early 80's 6.9 at the pick and pull. Got what was there for a cool benjamin. Then figure getting the turbo rebuilt at $350 because someone decided to disect it all over under the hood and leave everything scattered. But basicly complete!

YMMV
