Can someone tell me how to check the timing on a 95 ford aerostar 3.0 v6? Is there any pictures you can supply? Do I have to take anything off or can I see the timing marks without taking anything off?
You need an inductive timing light. Sure you could use a direct connect type, but due the confines, I have found inductive is much easier to use. You connect it on the #1 wire. Then you need to remove the SPOUT connector. The SPOUT signal tells the TFI system how much advance, retard, dwell it needs. Since you are trying to set base timing, you need to disable this signal. The connector is on the main harness on the firewall. You just pull the SPOUT out and then point your timing light at the crank pulley. You might need to push the hoses and stuff over and aim the light at a specific angle. The correct timing is 10 BTC. You may need to rub white chalk into the timing marks to make them more visible. Adjustments are made by rotating the distributor, located on the back of the engine. You will need to remove the doghouse cover for this.
To remove the doghouse, you first need to remove the cupholder tray. Then remove the ABS computer, located directly above the cupholder. It is held on with two 5/16 or 8mm hex nuts. Then unplug the connector and set it aside. Then unlatch the doghouse cover and pull it down and out. Truth be told, the timing rarely changes or drifts, doesn't hurt to check it though.
