My Turn V's

Took Stewart's advice and used no power tools. That's just my sore muscles aching after doing a 1/2 V swap. Got some V's on CL for $15 each and started attacking. All I can say is they come out easier than they go in. I put back the 2.5'' levelling kit that was there before and gained another 1.75'' so far. Likely they'll settle to 1.5''. My Brother in Law showed up like a blister (that's code for after the work's all done) to help.

PS: a 3' cheater bar does wonders.

A few more pictures. Yeah the blocker beam is long gone after the winch bumper went on.

LOL! I have never advised anyone not to use power tools. All I've ever said was I didn't use them and I didn't have any problems getting everything off!

Having two floor jacks really helped position the springs though. At least it did for me.

Dang!, I thought there was an award for using muscle power.

Just have to reward myself...

I put some heat from a plumbers torch on the nuts on the front spring eye bolts to soften up the factory thread lock compound, after that those bolts spun out real easy (with my electric impact).
I had to do everything on the rears by hand due to the giant size of my impact, it was a lot less fun back there......

wpnaes,

I have always liked the way your X looked in your avatar, but had assumed you had more lift that 2". Prior to the recent upgrade had you done anything to lift the rear? Also, how well did the 315/75 16's work on the stock wheels with only 2" of lift. I need new rubber and this is exactly the setup I am leaning toward. I am looking to increase the height a bit and step up to a tire that will perform better off-road, but I also want to keep it low enough that I can still fit in my garage.

Thanks,

Dustin

Thanks Dustin, The front had stock springs with a 2.5'' level lift that you can see in the pics. The rear end is all stock. 315's fit perfectly in back and have given me a touch of rub in the front at full lock. It doesn't bother me to rub the front leaf spring (just the back half of the spring; there's a pic of that rub in my garage pic folder). I haven't had any issues with 315 tire wear on the stock rim (other than what was caused by the tired tie rods, shocks, etc). I found a cheap set of wider (9''?) aluminum rims on CL that will go on the next set of 315's I buy.

Why do good ideas like that come 1/2 way through a project?

I have some before pics in the garage. I'll take some after I get her done. So far she fits in the garage with 1 1/4 inches to spare.

Do you think you were a full 2.5" higher then stock upfront or was your front bumper and winch bringing it back down a hair?

Good point, yes the bumper and winch brought it down 3/8-1/2 inch easily. The week I ran around with the woody front bumper, it was noticably lighter in front, but I didn't notice the tire rub...

Good Job!

The cheater is great thing to use.

I finally got tired of breaking them, tho.

So I got this bad boy. I originally bought it to do the crush sleeve on my axle spindles.

Now I use it for everything tough. 40 inches long and rated for 1000 ft lbs

available in lots of places online

I'm just breakin' the sockets - need to buy higher quality stuff. Agree, 3/4 inch drive breaker isn't gonna break like the 1/2 stuff - 中国制造

Also showing the tools I used to do this job. 6pt sockets work much better than the 12pt.

Thx Ford for the front pointy shackle bolts - hammer turn, hammer turn, without muckin' up the threads in a less-than-perfectly-aligned re-install.

A few more pic's of the other side. Went a bit smoother today, still 6hrs to get'em in and set.

One more 'before' picture. Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - wpnaes's Album: Adventures outside the Garage - Picture

Got out the tape measure and the level kit is only 1 7/8'' tall. Picture of putting them on the V leaves. Will do a bit more driving tomorrow to better assess.
