Robert Shaw, 333-192, ordered this new one especially, and found I already had one.

And ya I know how it works, what I'M saying is, is it at ALL possible, that my engine is running SO COOL, that the thermo just never opens, the fan/radiator/anything are NOT COOLING EVER, and my engine is just circulating within itself, and it STILL can't heat up?

That's what I was getting at, is it possible for an engine to run that cold with the thermo closed?

Longshot, but.......

I suppose it's possible.

Our welding truck at work has a Detroit 8.2 diesel and we cannot get it to run hotter than 160. Even removed the fan and let it idle, 140-160 degrees. Run it hard down the highway, 140-160 degrees. There must be some sort of bypass for the t-stat that allows coolant to keep flowing, I haven't looked into it, but it's interesting.

Here are a couple things I found:

Well, thanks for the effort searching, but it's a 400 block so it has that restrictor precast (that's the thing that you need the special thermo for) like that thread says, and it does indeed have it, I just checked to be sure earlier today.

I am stumped. I'm going to really run it around tomorrow and see what I can find, but beyond that I'm probably going to just block off the radiator and see if I can at least affect some change.

Facing the very same issue with entirely different engine. I have come to only one solution. The stock fan will have to go and replaced with an electric fan that I can control. Hadn't thought about it much this summer, but really need to get it done before it turns cold. Never worked on your specific engine, but the small blocks and six's I do work on, have a bypass hose on water neck that allows for some circulation before thermostat opens.

No offense dude but i just think you're irrational, i.e. full of ****, i follow this board pretty closely and every other day you have two or three "issues" that seem to come up out of nowhere, you seem to seek out problems where none exist, perhaps you are OCD or just require an over abundance of attention, i have no idea what your deal is, but i for one will no longer be responding to your ridiculous threads, good luck and god speed my friend.

You can test the thermostat by suspending it with some wire so it's submerged but not touching the bottom of a pan of water. Put a thermometer in with it and heat it up. You can watch it open and note the temperature it does it to see if it opens fully then drop it in some cold water and watch it close up. When you remove it from the truck when it's cold it should be closed . That is the last suggestion i have and i don't believe the fan blade or shroud has any thing to do with it. They might come in to play if the engine was trying to overheat. JIM

Hold on hold on hold on now, whaaaat?

First of all, saying "no offense", and then following it with, "[you're] full of ****" is one of the most irrational things I've ever heard. I HATE when people think that by saying "no offense" they can say anything offensive they want, and it's fine, but generally people get over that somewhere around the 4th grade.

Second, I do bring up a few issues a day SOMETIMES, you're correct, but as for every other day, you must either not follow this board as closely as you say, or simply be lying, because there are weeks long periods where I don't post anything at all! Then, when I get some time, and some money, I come on here and try to deal with all the ****, that my truck is full of! And I don't know what your schedule is like, but I only get that chance every once and a while, and so when I do, I tend to jump on it, sorry for offending you with the frequency of my posts!

Third, and as I see it most irrationally on your part, I'm not sure what your deal is, but I am pretty sure that these problems do indeed exist! Maybe you would have a stronger argument if you provided us all with some specific examples, but looking at say, the last 10 or so threads I've started, I'm not noticing very many that didn't exist!

That is of course just the humble opinion of the owner and sole driver of my truck though, I wouldn't put too much stock in my observations over those of you, the mighty and brilliant Montana Highboy, who clairvoyantly watches me in Massachusetts, from Montana, I'm sure you are much more in tune with what my truck is doing on a minute to minute basis than just silly OCD me.

You know though, as POSITIVE as I am that that is indeed the case; that you clearly know more about the state and performance of my chassis bushings, steering shaft, temperature gauge, and every other part of my truck than I do, I just keep having all these weird memories of these symptoms that just must not exist! I feel so sure sitting here right now, that just 3 or 4 days ago, going down the highway, I hit a bump and my trucks takes off into a resonant frequency death rattle, and the girl who was riding with me remembered too! Geezzzzz, I must really be crazy, dreamin' up dem whitnusses n awl!

I mean really? I can take pictures of eeeeeverything that I've described, I can send you the actual stuff that has failed! I mean what, specifically, don't you believe? This heating problem? I can't make you believe, this ain't the inquisition! But what motivation do you think I'd have to lie?! Maybe the steering shaft being loose? Well, we may have different definitions of loose, but I will mail it to you if you wanna pay for postage, and beyond that I invite ANY FTE MEMBER WHO WISHES TO COME HERE AND SEE IT IN PERSON, TO DO SO, AND GIVE US ALL THEIR OPINION ON IT, IT IS LOOSE! Maybe you think I'm just dreaming up my track bar bushings being shot, or my drag link being worn out, well sorry, but I've posted pictures of the one, and you're just going to have to take my word on the other!

I do have an A/C unit, or some part of one, that I needed more information on, my gas tank does leak, in 2 places infact! And my gas pedal does flutter at 2500 RPM! Drive the f^@% out here and say ANY of what you just wrote to me in person. If you question me, I'll politely but authoritatively prove it to you, and if you come at me with a bull**** ENTIRELY ungrounded attitude like you have here, I will say every word I have to you right here, and more, but I bet you wouldn't dare to do it. I bet you don't even have the stones to challenge me in person. And I don't mean a WORD of this in the physical sense, I just bet you couldn't even stand in front of me, and read the few piddly little lines that you wrote here. The internet's a great mask huh? Well you sure look big now don't you.

And beyond allllll of that, REEEEEGARDLESS of what the hell you think of my posts, or my questions, or me, it is well established on this site, that if you have a problem with someone, you LEAVE, you SHUT IT, and you keep it to yourself. You do not attack them personally, publicly.

I have never, once, made myself out to be a person well versed in cars, anything about them. I have certainly never LIED on this board! What the hell motivation would I have to do that? I have ALWAYS, at the beginning of almost every post infact, stated my INCOMPETENCE in most of the subjects we discuss here. No one in my family knows cars, very very few of my friends know cars, none well, I am the first. I am learning everything from the ground up, starting with this truck! And it's not so easy for a 20 year old kid, who has NO prior experience or knowledge in this kind of stuff to rebuild a transmission, or a carburetor, but you know what? I've done it! And I love it, and you should be f***ing glad that someone of the younger generation has such an interest in your DYING ART, and such RESPECT by the way, for YOU, and ALL OF THE OTHER PEOPLE ON THIS SITE, AND IN THIS OLD CAR WORLD! 99% of the people I have met in this hobby have been some of the nicest, most generous, and most god awful interesting people I've ever met in my life! But then there's the guys like you, maybe out stuff to tinker with (which I think we can all understand), or maybe just out of booze for the day, who feel the need to belittle, and condescend, and just PICK AT those who clearly do not know as much as they do.

Yes I ask a heck of alot of questions, but that's because I am extremely interested, and I know relatively little, and I THOUGHT this was a place where even the newest newbie could always come to learn, with at least MINIMAL embarrassment at what they do not know, but maybe I was wrong. And you know why else I ask alot of stuff, my truck has a f***ing lot of problems! It's old, and it's had the shiiiiiit driven out of it! Literally every system has failed since I bought it, and I unfortunately wasn't born with the natural ability to fix them! I am here not only to learn about 73-79 Ford trucks, and what my specific problem is that day, but to learn about cars in general, and how the entire syyyystems work. I hope to someday be as good at this stuff as some of the great people on here, and you know what, this is one of the few avenues I have to do it! I don't have the money or the time to go out and buy ten old cars, and take them all apart, and my family has never been a family that has had them lying around, like alot of you lucky folks! So I'm sorry if I ask alot of questions, clog up the board even, but for god sakes it's a damn internet forum! That's the whole point!

If you don't like it, leave. But since the issue has been raised, I invite anyone who wants to (and this is dead serious, maybe I have something of a different sort to learn here), to let me know, on this thread, if I am annoying, or overdoing it. You don't have to get into anything more than you want to, and please don't make it childish or personal, but if I overdo it, please, honestly, let me know here.

And beyond all that, back to you specifically you little childish rat, I do have OCD: professionally diagnosed, and treated, and it's responsible for some of the best parts of my personality, and some of the worst, and it's been a real obstacle at a few points in my life, but I've gotten past it, and damn well flourished. And I'm not afraid to admit it, but you can bet your weasly little ignorant *** that more than one other person with it, diagnosed or otherwise, read this here today, and was greatly offended, but was just too timid (motherF***ING understandably if you knew one thing about it) to admit it. So you better watch what you just go posting on the internet, because you might very well be talking to that one person, who is the wrooooong guy.

In conclusion, thank you much for the wish of godspeed, it's one of my favorite sayings, and I hope to live up to it fully, and I think it's pretty clear going by just these two posts, who will be hearing that more over the course of the rest of their life, and who's going to fall flat on their mean unnecessary ignorant face, or maybe, who already has, and is a little grumpy about it?

Thank you for your input Montana, and yes, please, just keep your distance from me and my threads from now on. Much appreciated.

AleX

Honestly like, that's not acceptable. Who do I talk to about problems on the forum? Like, you can't just say stuff like that, have it confirmed, and then reply without an apology, let alone another little quip like that.

Can a moderator please get involved here.

A dick because you joked about me having a mental illness, then I let you know I did, and you responded sarcastically. Yes, a dick!

And howbout you man up and respond to the phone number that I just private messaged you? Instead of posting here like you're still all high and mighty and in the right?

If you don't get the problem fixed anytime soon, you may want to change your oil more often or at least check the oil for a gassy smell. If the engine doesn't get hot enough the blowby gas will likely stay in the oil.

Hopefully you will get the problem fixed.

That wasn't really necessary. Forums are for discussing things and solving problems.

Haha, yes yes I did read it, and thanks, very cool idea, never knew it was that simple, but I guess it makes total sense. Just got a liiiittle bit distracted haha, and I've been blowing off steam welding most of the afternoon.

The new one is in there all sealed up for the moment, but I may try that with the old one, just for extra insurance/out of curiosity, or if I'm bored haha.

I'll keep everybody updated with what I find, AleX
