You guy are kill,n me went to the lake yesterday pulled boat 4,000lbs 60 miles burnt half a tank. my truck is 4 door 1ton 4x4 with 355s turbo what gives
?? either the black smoke was a rolling, fuel was being dumped on the ground, or you went by the fuel tank gauge that is accurate as weather channel (there is a 50% chance that it's going to rain).
ouch! whats the service history on the engine?
how does she do when not towing?
is this the '92 with E40D or the '94 with ZF5?
60 miles was the total round trip miles? did you fuel up to see how many gallons was actually used? was the tank 100% full before you headed out?
I have never touched injection pump or injectors just the basics fuel filter and oil changes air filter that kinda stuff. I have noticed metal on the oil plug last two oil changes one guy from work thought cam gear wear.
You can not go by the gauge. i was calculating my mpg from the gauge and i was getting 9-10mpg. then without changing anything i calculated it out with acctually gallons used and math and i was getting 18 mpg not 10.
Edit: truck is a '94 IDI factory turbo, e4od, sclb, 2wd, 4.10 ls, factory tire size.
My 94 F250 7.3 IDI N/A E4OD 3:55 gears totally stock with a 8' tool bed and weighing around 9K lbs. has gotten a consistent 15 MPGs over the last 5 years I have kept records.
Well, that is exceptionally bad MPG. Not that I can talk. My '91 F250 E4OD with 3.55s gets 10 MPG on a good day. It has other issues but let's assume 1 bad injector and the timing may be off. It was at 8.5BTDC but that did no good. Oh, I'm not towing anything with these numbers. I wish Diesel was $1.25/gal again!

You might try MILITEC-1 Synthetic Metal Conditioner to help stop the wear. $36.90 off of Ebay, alot cheaper than tearing into it. Also, cut your oil filter open to get a better idea of what is really happening.
Use a large pipe cutter or take it to a big truck repair shop. They will normally have a special cutter. Short of that, a cold chisel would be better than sawing it to prevent chips from contaminating the element.
