Tom ... when you say "It will start below that, but that's considered abuse by FMC." you mean that starting it below -10F without the block heater is considered abuse correct? If so WOW that statement has many implications. What is one to do when say parking in a mall where there are no plugins available or at work. Living in Ontario I can think of 100's of incidents where a block heater plugin is just not realistic. Is FMC saying that this engine is not for use in northern climates? These are pretty Big Words. Just saying.
I am originally from northern MN, Canada was 1/4 mile over the river.
When you get to that ramp they are plugging in large gas engines. Marvin windows down the road has plugs in front of each parking spot and that was in a dirt lot. That leave the trucks 400 hp with 1200 ft/lb running unless they are in the garage. The 6.7 is 400/800 not much difference there. Oil still turns to molasses.
I can understand considering it abuse, comes with a engine that runs off fuel and heat.

Remember that this only applies to stone cold starts and not with a warm engine. It seemed to take my truck 15+ hours for the EOT or ECT to get down to ambient temp. With the oil above -10 I wouldn't hesitate to start it without the block heater.
Tom ..... totally agree that things will stay warm for quite a while but it still concerns me that Ford will consider it abuse if started below -10 without a block heater. This could turn into a warranty claim being rejected for the right or wrong reasons. Does the onboard track the ambient AND if a block heater was on?
1. The manual says that the block heater is required for below -10°. It will start below that, but that's considered abuse by FMC.
Hmmmm..I'll have to ask our Ford Dealer about that...
..I live in Northern Canada....I don't even consider -10F cold. I start pluggin in (occasionally) at -15F. And mostly at -20F. I own a towing business, and tow regularly to FORD dealers. I have never heard of this being an issue. I also own 5 Diesels.
Is everyone else seeing their glow plug indicator everytime they start their truck? I noticed that mine is not coming on at all. I I live in fl and realize the weather would not require the plugs to activate but I remember it used to come on. Anyone else having th same problem? I remember it did light just momentarily to indicate the lamp worked. But has stopped everytime now.
If the truck is started with the remote with no one in the cab...does the glow plug indicator light really come on?
(couldn't resist, it's Friday morning, been a short week - but a rough one, and I want it to be 5pm really bad)

Of course you do not consider it cold but the truck does. When my grandfather passed and I was standing outside in northern MN at -32 with no suit jacket my wife thought I was nuts, but I was not cold, the metal on the cars was cold. You have probably seem metal break when it should not also? Here in PA at 30 above I freeze with humidity. Anyways with them recording other things I also wonder about starting temperature being recorded so as to not to have to fix.
Brian... it is the Gnome's job to check for the glow plug light!

I am more curious if FORD considers it abuse, not to plug the truck. In my 37 years in the Auto business, I have not heard this mentioned.
I do run synthetic oil in the my vehicles.
But no, I think as long as you are using proper oils in your vehicles, whether it is diesel or gas, not plugging the vehicle in is not a warranty issue, but I will discuss this with my Ford dealer.
