Apparently the cap looks very similar - it just does not have the locking mechanism on the inside that snaps the filter into proper position. The truck has been in the shop and I have not been able to get over there - they are closed now. On Tuesday I hopefully will be able to post some pics and sort this out.
It is odd that no one noticed at Ford. I've also had the truck almost 3 yrs with no problems related to the cap. The headgaskets were 2 yrs ago, so go figure.
This was cheaper than gears, but they spent all day on it and cleaned the IPR so I know it is going to be "cheap" - another 6.0L lesson...
