I went to the J/Y for a caliper, and found two highly valuable items that made me kick myself b/c I couldn't afford them.
Both were from a bumpside. The cab had been taken, but they set a 'Perfect' seat right beside it. I mean it was newly reupholstered prob. a year ago, and was perfect. And I didn't know if it would fit my dent!! I need a new seat and it would match my interior too.
There was also a perfect METAL camper shell on the bed, with a door, clean windows and paint, nice alumumum. Super nice.
I hate to go when I don't have the cash to buy the stuff that just jumps out at me.
Speaking of seats that one sounds like it was especially nice. The one that is in my 74 is ripped in a couple spots and definitely needs some attention. Guess I'm going to have to swap in my later 60/40 bench w/ arm rests.
You need to make a effort to become "real good friends" with the Jy owner/operator. And that way if you see a part and can't get it at the moment but maybe they will let you set it in back or something along those lines?
I can haggle part prices at mine, and the owners son is a 73-79 guy also, so that fact helps alot. And he is always swamped unloading stuff, and can't go get parts off a Ford just dropped off, so I help out when he asks.

Unfortunately junk yard here aren't like the privately owned ones back east. The ones here are typically owned by corporations (ecology pick-a-part, etc.) and the "mom & pop" types are VERY few & far between, so your plan is VERY hard to pull off here. Although I am jealous you have a fellow dent guy as a local yard owner!
Sorry that things are like that out west, its always great to ask "how much for this" right up to the point he says "free, just go pull that dash pad outa that 79 that just came in"......
