6.7 Engine Failure
6.7 Engine Failure
Ok, this may be boggus info but my son, who drives a Duramax, was talking to a Dodge Diesel tech the other day and the tech said the new Ford 6.7s were having problems with piston sleeves detaching from the block and stretching the head bolts causing the head gaskets to blow. I have searched the forum and found no evidence of this but thought I would throw this out to see if there is any truth to this.
I've had my truck over a year and have had the opportunity to talk to the diesel mechanic at my dealer a few times and he told me that the only wrenching that he has done in that time is oil changes and services.
I call bs. The piston sleeves wouldn't come out anyway they are cast with the block. Only engines i've heard that happen on the 7.3idi and 6.9idi that have been sleeved without putting a lip to stop the sleeve from dropping into the block.
Good to know. My son is going to ask him where he got his info since it does seem to be BS. Kind of scared me cause I'm looking at the 6.7 as a replacement if mine ever fails.

I just happen to be in Katy tonight. Don't know if they have liners or not. If not, then the guy has a lot of explaining.
the only problem with engines I have heard of is a few bad cams back about a year ago, the batch was traced down and fixed. seriously I think ford can spike the football with the 6.7 none of our members here have had an issue that I know of with the engine. the 6.7 might just be the most reliable initial release ever for a pickup diesel engine and that includes the cummins engines that are legendary.
Yeah...I think we can safely say this is bogus info. The 6.7L has been very reliable for the ~15 months it's been released to the public. Catastrophic failures have happened but they seem to be very rare. A couple instances of chassis/cab trucks dropping valves and one cracked block are all I can remember.
The Utility I work for has a fleet of about 400 6.7's, so far company wide we've lost 15 engines, 5 in my area alone. All were due to head issues, valves breaking and hitting the pistons, destroying the engine. Needless to say, Ford is working on a fix. The engines with the issues are VIN # specific (Mine is one of them) and I was told by our Fleet Dept. that it looks like the heads may have to be replaced on 267 of them.

I don't know of a single pickup 6.7L that has had engine failures but there is chatter around the internet about a few cab & chassis 6.7L engine's having parts fail.
Not sure why those have an issue with less power.
