1973 360 bogs when accelerating
I have a freshly rebuilt 360 all stock with the acception of an Edelbrock Performer manifold and Edelbrock Performer 1406 carb. I've just finished getting everything together and running. The truck starts and idles fine, but doesn't want to accelerate when in gear. It bogs and will die if I continue to give it gas. That is with the timing set to factory specs 3 degrees. Since I went from a 2 barrel carb to a 4 I have tried bumping up the timing to about 13 degrees. I can now accelerate and go down the road, but it still tries to bog and definitly doesn't like hills. I am also still using the factory ignition system with the points. Obviously I know just enough to get myself into trouble, but don't know where to go from here. Do I need to advance the timing more? My next step is going to check out the accelerator pump. Any tuning tips?
i'm not terribly familiar with the Edelbrock carbs, but if this were an Autolite, then i'd be saying you should checking out the accelerator pump. for some carbs, at least- there are different size diaphragms, and you can also adjust the pump arm.
when you step on it, will it start to die and then pick back up, or does it just completely shut down?
