360 4 barrel intake

I just found a 4 barrel intake for the 360.Any suggestions for a carb?
What kind of horsepower increase should I expect if I put this on?Thanks for the input-Ken

Little to none. Buy the intake and save it for a rebuild and build the engine to run with a 4 barrel. The 360 motor is not designed for a 4 barrel, because it is a destroked 390 early emissions engine.

You can add a 390 crank later and with a cam the engine would support a 4 barrel carb.

You can go ahead and do it but I couldn't find the difference when I did it.

After a rebuild tis a different story. jus MHO

Actually, a 360 does wake up with a 4bbl, I've done it.

Whether or not it's a LOT, well, that's something different

You should use a small 4bbl, like a 600CFM, anything larger is overkill.

If you're looking for upgrades, get headers, along with that 4bbl.

After that, since it's a '74, you might want to buy a pre-72 timing chain set, and install that. The 1972 and later 360s had the cam timing changed for emissions and made it a complete slug.

I have had the 360 rebuilt already.From bottom to top.I did'nt know if I should go with the 4 barrel intake or not.I did go with the 390 crank and Heddman headers with flowmasters and she sounds real good.

If you went with the 390 crank then you needed 390 rods and the engine would be a 390 now and not a 360. Either way, put the 4 barrel on it. Go with a 600 CFM with vacuum secondaries. My preference is to go with a Holley, easier to tune.

Ford never offered a 360 4V. The 4V manifold is most likely from a passenger car with a 390/410 or 428.

The only years 390 4V's were available (as an option) in F100/350's was 1974/76.

I had a 360 with over 200,000 miles on it for a while. I put a edelbrock performer 390 intake and edelbroock 600 cfm carb and it really woke up that engine. I could light up my 35's no problem, and it would pull anything I wanted to put behind it. Now I have my 428 scj back in and if you want some mega power look into a 428.

4bbl intake

As ive posted, I just got a f100 with a Fe 360 2bbl, And I found a 4bbl intake off a 390 will it work on my 360 are the ports the same size?

I baught a 351C 4bbl intake once it wouldnt fit on my 351C 2bbl?

Yes your intake will work fine, the port mismatch is a Cleveland only thing.

Actually you are incorrect, you can have port mismatch with the FEs. If you have an early, 1965 and earlier intake with the tall ports (1.16" X 2.14") and put it on the 1966 and later small port heads (1.34" X 1.93"), the step from large to small can screw up the air flow. A late intake (small ports, (1.16" X 1.94") on the early heads (large ports, 1.34" X 2.34") is not an issue.

So the Best thing to really do is by an after market ?

If the motor is stock and you do nor have immediater plans to make the motor grow more CID, the facory stock intakes are as good as anything and a bunch cheaper.

I dont mind boring an engine, But why spend hundreds on a 360 around MS 390's can still be found, I found 3 460's One in a truck 2 in Lincolns, I was hoping to take the 360 to around 335 -360 HP in a cost sufficient way but I dont see it been possible, by cranks , 150-175 , then 390 rods $$$ I dont know , then pistons, I seen some on ebay for around 125,

I dont get it, my dad had a 360 in around, 1976 ford 3/4 ton it was 2bbl but had a 270 or so cam it would scream, so whats wrong with this 68 360? I looked at the VIN label on ther door its a 360 172 hp rated Y

Ok lets go Like this, As much as I thought I knew about fords Im lagging on this 360 it really caught me off guard persay

Step by step To get the most out of this engine

1-put a 390 crank in it

2-390 rods

3-bore to fit a 9-1 10-1 390 Piston

4-change push rods

5-use 390 timing gears and chain

6-throw in a 272-282 cam

7-getting lost here on this engine 360- do I use the 360 heads or change them to? Do they need shaved some, Do I need to port the exaust valves
will the smaller port intake heads and 4bbl intake be enough to get me the HP and torque I want


I'm a Ford man but when I was 20 I built a 65 SWB chevy truck, 350 300HP double Hump heads, 10-1 flat tops 272 cam, 750 Holly, left it 3 on the collumn
I could line my front bumper up with a light pole HWY distance, 1-2-3

3rd light pole it would run 90 3 light poles always 87 -90 I left it in second gear

I'm a Ford Guy, I really liked that truck,

But things happened, So Now I want to make a ford growl.

but because the truck is original and everything I would like to keep as much to original as I can. So Buck for Buck $
What am I looking at to get 335-350 --- HP out of this FE?

First off no 360 ever came from the factory with a 270° cam. If the motor was recamed then it was probably also had a piston change for more compression. before I installed my 390 in my 1968 F250 I did two things. First I installed a 4 barrel "S" intake with a 600 CFM Holley. I also installed a true dual exhaust with a cross over pipe. The two together really made the motor come alive. Before I did the duals the 4 barrel didn't do much. When i did my 390 I used '69 390GT heads, not ported or even cleaned up with the afore mentioned intake and carb. I used an RV cam with a 256° duration and a .510" lift and that 390 with the camper in the truck and the race boat behind it would runaway from my buddies 1977 F250 with a 460 and all he was carrying was a camper. The combo also pulled 13 mpg empty, even with the 3.73 rear end. The motor was a torque monster. I even towed a customers 31" offshore go fast catamaran with ease.

You are under the impression that horsepower is important because that is what has been shoved down American's throats for 50 years. Horsepower gives you top speed only. However torque is what make street performance, especially in a truck. Anything over 9.5 to 1 compression is gonna require premium gas.
