Oil Change interval

Approaching the mileage for my 5k oil change, and it led me to a question.

The manual recommends oil changes at 7,500 miles. On this site and even one of the dealer service centers said 5k. Is there any particular reason for a 5k oil change interval? Have no problem doing it, but an extra 2,500 miles would do good for the pockets, lol.

Also, for those of you who do not change the oil yourselves...do you still take it to the dealer? The dealer I take it to last time charged $120, again not a huge issue (you got to pay to play), but I was wondering if you guys have any other spots you may use? Like any of the oil change chains or what not. I just dont want anyone to mess up the truck, and it just gives me a safe feeling when the dealer has it because I figure they know what they are doing. But I have seen people on here menitioning they got their oil changed for a lot cheaper so I just thought I would inquire about it.

I watch for coupons and usually get the oil changed for $70 at a Ford Dealer, I change at 5k intervals.

If you aint running synthetic oil in a 6.0L, you need to be changing it at 5k. You can change the oil yourself at Walmart using Motorcraft fluid and filters for $60.

If you check your manual closely, you will see they recommend 5k OCI for severe duty useage. Then if you check what severe duty means, you will almost certainly find that you are a severe duty user. It you are not, you probably wouldn't be driving a Superduty.

I use 5W-40 synthetic, and I change at no more than 5k miles, and sometimes I think I'm stretching it at that, based on my oil analysis reports.

Thumbs up 5K miles

Been doing it myself for 35+ years. I like to know what goes in and on my engines. If your gonna have toys you gotta keep the maintenance up.

If your not doing it yourself, make sure they use only "OEM" filters.

One of the big reasons for 6.0 having shorter OCI than factory spec is shearing. Especially on a 5w40 6.0s will shear the tar out of the oil and within 3k, you have 30weight oil in your system, which IMHO isn't the end of the world like some people make it seem. So long as your wear numbers aren't increasing as the viscosity decreases then I wouldn't freak out.

I have read a good amount of people are running 7.5k OCIs with 10w-30 HDEO, they tend to resist shear better than 15W40 and significantly better than 5w40s.

OEM is Racor.

The Motorcraft, International, and now the Fram are made by Racor.
