i have noticed a slight clunk at take off. figuring it was a u-joint i got under the truck today and found all the joint to be tight still. I did find at the transfer case rear output yoke there is play between the yoke and drive shaft flange, almost like the bolt holes are egg shaped. the bolts are super tight. i had a socket with a 12" breaker bar and was almost doing pull ups under the truck.
so has anyone else have this issue, or whats the best fix? (its the truck in my sig)
I am following this because I also have the same clunk at the TC tail shaft and not the slip joint. Slip joint has been greased with Ford PTFE lubricant with no change. Please report your results to this thread if a correction is found. All searches indicate the slip joint which it is not.
Well......the most common cause IS the slip yolk! However that does not mean the only cause, second most common cause is a bad universal joint usually the rear, the least common is a worn companion flange I have only come upon this once when the wrong (shouldered) bolts were installed at the differential side on the one I had this did no allow enough holding force when the shoulder bottomed out just after contact with the flange surface after several months or years of operation the holes on the shaft flange wore out to twice the original size before bolts started braking customer never complained because it happens ^so gradually it just grew on hew and she thought it was normal!
