Personally, I would let it go. You said $800 for it if he accepts it. Ok, $1000 for the truck. At least another $1000 in it for trans. Then you have wheel bearings $50-100 per side, depends where you buy from ebay or your local store. What else does it need. Oh, it's a base model too. No frills truck. Power or no power you can buy an XLT - loaded or an Eddie Bauer for what you will put into that and it won't have the dents, won't have been flipped on it's side. Once that was on it's side, you can pretty much guess that there are issues with the body. It probably isn't "true" anymore. Not worth it. It would be a great parts truck to part out. Is it the 4.6L or 5.4L? Buy one that doesn't need the work- body or mechanical and you will spend the same amount of money. No hassle or headaches for you. Look around, these trucks are going cheap. The market is bottoming out on them because people aren't going to want them because of fuel mileage and $4/gal. Also, these trucks are at least 1/3 less than KBB or NADA values. Take your time and look. You will find what you are looking for. Walk away from it. Guarantee once you start fixing that, it probably won't stop.
I fully understand and I agree but I know I can't get much out of my car and idk how much longer it will keep going I am already looking at putting 5-6k in a 25 year old truck and that's just the engine and that's barely scratching the surface on what I can spend
If the car isn't worth, don't spend any money on it. Sell it as is and find yourself a decent ride with the few bucks you get from that and what you are looking at spending on this Expy. Believe me, if you look, you will find a decent, reliable vehicle for around $3K. What, are you putting gold into a 25 year old truck. That's a chunk of change.
Full engine rebuild around 3.5k and turbo kit 2k it's an 86 6.9 diesel... I have had the car up for sale for a year the best offer I have received it 650 and I can get almost that in scrap
Talk him down to $500 ... flush the trans and then put some Tranny treatment in it and run it till it dies ! Who cares what the passenger side looks like. Don't go to that side of the truck ! IF you plan on using it as a commuter it will COST to fill the beastie up !
Look for a used 7.3L already w/turbo. 1995-1997 would most likely drop in and bolt right up. Just a thought. Probably about same money and the 7.3 is a better engine. Easy to come by, parts are available.
