I seem to have been having a problem with vibration/grinding while idling for the last couple months, but couldn't seem to pinpoint its source. I have the manual NV271 transfer case with stock manual locking hubs. At a dead stop I tried to put the transfer case in 4 low with the the hubs unlocked and moved forward a couple feet and it made a bad grinding noise. I climbed underneath and tried to turn the front driveshaft and it would only turn about 180 degrees before it would bind. Not bind completely-I could still turn it, but was getting a little tighter at certain points. With the engine running at idle, I had someone climb under and rotate the front driveshaft--found my vibration/grind at idle!! So my question is what could cause this condition?????
I dont believe its moving while Im driving. I think the next step is to remove the driveshaft and pinpoint what exactly is sticking/binding--TC, u-joints, or axle. I will have time next weekend to tear into it. Im just wondering what could cause a binding in the transfer case itself IF that is where it is coming from.
I know this might sound like a stupid question but don't you have to have the truck stopped and in neutral to be able to put it in low range. Just asking cause that's what the ESOF has to do.
