Transfer Case Ticking
I'm not sure if the problems are related, but I'll try and explain it. This past winter I noticed that my drivers side auto hub wanted to disengage from time to time when I was pulling hard in deep snow. Especially if I got hung up and was going from reverse to forward. When it would engage it was quite a loud bang. So, manual hubs are scheduled to be put in this fall. I am wondering if that loud bang was doing a number on my transfer case. The past month my transfer case has been acting a little funny and making some unusual sounds. For instance, when I put the pickup in four wheel drive it seems to drop in fine most of the time. Its when I come to take it out the problems start. The manual shifter for engagement moves back into 2 wheel drive fine. Its when I get out on the open road I start to feel a vibration and ticking noise coming from what I believe is my transer case. If I slow down the ticking gets louder until it "bangs" and then all seems fine. I've been messing around with it the last week and almost everytime after disengaging 4x4 it will do this. I've tried backing up after taking it out of four wheel drive, that doesn't help. I've also noticed that if I accelerate fast I can hear it clicking until I let up off the gas. So, what gives? Am I looking at a transfer case rebuild? I'm not postive what transer case it is. I know its a Borg Warner, I want to say its a 1356.
I appreciate any ideas you guys might have....
Thanks,
JEV
