i recently dropped a valve in my 86 f150 300inl 6, its 4x4 with a t18 4sp, i recently pulled the 300 6 out that had the feed back carb out and swapped in a 302 out of an 77 f150. i used the distributor sylinoid from the 77 and the flywheel and clutch. i reused my original altinator and i replaced the cylinoid from a 86 f150 302 and i reused my bell housing and hydrolic clutch, the problem i am having is the truck will start but it will only stay running if i have the ignition switch the hole way forword as soon as i let the switch go back it dies, the other issue is if u let the clutch out the truck will die something with the neutral safety switch? the 302 uses a coil and the 300 did not i ran a pos. from the coil to the starter cylinoid please any help?
Like ctubutis said, that's a ballast resistor problem. 86 didn't have them. Older ignitions had 2 circuits, a start that ran 12 volts and a run circuit that went thru the resistor that was about 8 volts. So if you check you probably don't have any voltage at the coil unless the switch is in start.
i ran a pos. from the coil to the starter cylinoid
Why did you do that? That way the coil only gets voltage when the truck is cranking, since that's all the starter solenoid is for, cranking the engine.
i used the ignition modual from the 77 and all the wires from the coil and distributor, the 77s modual only had 2 plus one for the dist. wiring andcoil wiring. my 300 had an accel ignition modual that had only 2 wires that ran to it then it had a spark plug wire from the modual to the cap. all i did was take the accel modual out and put the 77s modual in its place and used the 2 wires that were already there to power it. i have a complete donor vehicle and have all ascess to it were can i find the ballast at? and oh yeah the 77s wiring harness had a lead for the pos off the coil but the truck would not turn over and my 86 300s starter cylinoid did not have a post for a coil lead so i purchased one for 86 302 and it had a lead for the coil
You should have a red/green laying around somewhere that feeds the coil + also. It already has the ballast resistor made into this wire if you can find it. The coil wire going to the solenoid is only for 12v boost(bypass the resistor) during cranking. You need that other coil + feed wire to make it keep running.
sorry about all the questions this truck is drivin me crazy i had 3 wiring diagrams 1 on the older 77 circuit and 2 on my 86 circuit but the 2 for my 86 says 2 completely different diagrams and they were both for the 300. the 77s is pretty straight forword but im lost in the diagram for the 86. im wondering if i have to just bite the bullet and tear into my steering colum and trace all the wires out. but thanks for all the help from the forum i just need to get my truck goin again i took some pics of what wiring i have and how i have it wired any insight on what i should try i would be very appreciated. the wifes getting tired of me using her car
ok thanks for the help i did some long research and found out i just need to locate my run wire in the ignition switch and run it to the red connector on the 77s duraspark connector and i should be good thaks again
