Ok, so I got the van fixed, running, and legal. Now I'm thinking. Could a 4.0 transmission be bolted to a 3.0 after changing the bellhousing? I know that is different, but what about the rest.
I have an 88 aerostar, and I was thinking of using as late as possible 4.0 A4LD to take advantage of the updates and such. I'm not planning it unless the transmission goes, which given the history of this van, I need to plan for lol. I want to know my options, that's all.
The answer is yes and no. Yes, you can make the 4.0L transmissions fit without a problem. No you can not swap just any A4LD. The early A4LD like your are different in a number of ways from the '91 and later units. Subtle things like changes in the location of the speed sensor and type of speedometer can make swaps more complicated. I am not a fan of transmission swaps because you in the long run rarely get good results. Complete transmission rebuilds in my opinion are a much better route, you basically are fixing what you have. You can swap the internals of a later A4LD into your older case, particularly the internals of a stronger, later A4LD.
Either way, the 3.0L and 4.0L use different calibrations. If you swap them around, you can get dumb shift points unless you calibrate the unit for your engine. If you keep your existing valve body, but upgrade it, you shouldn't need too much of a calibration.
