I've gone through past posts, which tell me there's a bell housing problem, but it's not clear whether the swap can be done at all.
I have an '88 Ranger 2.3 available to use for parts. It has a 4-speed auto which I assume is an A4LD.
Can it swap into a '91 Aerostar 3.0 without major problems?

The best advice is to ask the junkyard, they have compatibility info. Also you can just match up the trannys side by side. I would assume the 91 has some electronic sensors that are controlled by the cpu, that the older does not have, but maybe I'm wrong on that
Thanks. I forgot the '91 might be electronic.
I thought I'd never live long enough to have to deal with an electronic trannie! I'm a senior citizen who's never bought a new vehicle and never will.
I got into this Aerostar without checking that out, the price was right.
Just a note. I would be careful about what the junkyards tell you cause you know they want to sell you one they have. My buddy put an A4LD trans from a 1990 AWD Aerostar into a 1989 Bronco II with very minor modifications. The wreckers said they were completely different and it couldn't be done. Sorry I can't answer your question specifically but this site is definitely the place to get proper and un-biased opinions and advice. Good luck!
