e4od manual shift only, 89 e250 7.3 idi
I bought a 1989 e250 xlt club wagon for next to nothing a few months ago and have been busy fixing it up and finaly got it trough inspections and back on the road. Still many problems left but its able to move around under its own power. Great car with a strong engine and i really enjoy driving it!
My biggest consern is the e4od auto, it only works by shifting it manually. P, R, N works just fine. 1 & 2 gives me the same low gear, and D gives me another higher one. I can take off in D but that takes forever to get moving. And it shifts really hard, so hard it cant be good for the tranny!
I have been all over google about this problem and found many usefull tips and tricks, but nothing that can lead me to the real cause of my problem. I suspect its something electrical, most likely the PCM module (or whatever you name it) is toast or not getting any power. I tried to read error codes trough the EEC, nothing at all! Not even a single blink form the test-light. Unplugged and cleaned both connectors on the tranny, no difference. Drove it around the block with the connectors unplugged, same thing! No response if i press the OD-off button. Cruise controll also doesnt work, but that might not be related?
Now here comes my stupid question: where is the Mysterius-Transmission-Control-Gizmo actually located on my van?? And does anyone have a complete wiring diagram for it? Im starting to wonder if the PO has removed it because I cant find it, but theres quite a few unplugged and loose wires floating around under the dash.
Everything points to the transmission control module either not getting power or not even there. There is a power relay that frequently fails. I *THINK* it is mounted on the radiator support, but it has been many years since I looked at an '89. I also don't remember where the transmission control module was mounted in 1989, it may have been to the right of the passenger's feet in the kick panel.

I was finaly able to localize the PCM, it was right there in front of me all the time!! Just hidden behind a plastic cover that led me into believing it was something else. Checked the connector on the other side of the firewall (wich is almost impossible to find it you doesnt know its there) and it was partially unplugged. Cleaned it up an put it back in and now I have a fully operational automatic transmission

Pic of the PCM for future reference (not behind the kicker panel like someone suggested, but thanks anyway for leading me in the right direction)

After a short test drive im even more impressed with my van, this thing pulls like an angry bull on drugs! What i bought for less-than-scrapmetal-prize after way-too-many-beers an hot summernight has now turned out to be one of the best deals i have ever made.
