I am going to try and confirm this today after I get home but I finally went to drive the truck after getting the new engine in it and everything running good on it. I thought it was down on power but after taking it down the street and back last night I think it may be taking off in 2nd. I tried to mash the gas and it didnt do much and didnt downshift either. I suspect its not shifting. Wanted to get some ideas of what to check or look at before I get too crazy. Its a E40D 4x4 truck that I just swapped from a 5.0L to 5.8L. Rebuilt engine, all new stuff on it, got it idling good and engine seems responsive when the gas is pressed, but doesnt seem to want to go like it should. I thought I had a power problem with the engine but that does not appear to be the case. Point me in the right direction. And No I have not run codes yet. Will do that too.
Will it actually pull transmission codes on that tranny? I thought the computer didnt control the E4OD which is why I was told I did not need a E4OD specific PCM.

Wrong. The computer controls the engine AND the transmission when you have an E4OD.
Ok.. Maybe I was thinking the other direction. I know I needed a computer from a truck with a E4OD for my swap. I was thinking it was because the others did control the tranny and mine does, but was probably confused. Other way around. I will try to pull codes if I have time tonight and see if anything comes up.
Ok.. I will try to pull codes. So nothing I can check on this thing to see if there is a reason for it not shifting other than pulling codes? I did a engine swap. Is there a chance a vacuum line or something is not plugged in?
There is no vacuum connection to the transmission, it's 100% electronic controlled. There are codes triggered if a connection to the control solenoids are bad/missing/etc. That's why it is highly suggested to pull the codes instead of guessing.
The lack of shifting suggests no power to the solenoid pack.
It is a 1992. I will try to verify that I have the correct computer. It is suppose to be for a 5.8L with E4OD. But there is always a chance it was not correct. I have the original 5.0L computer I could throw in just to verify that it is or is not the computer causing it to not shift.
I dont think it is in 4th gear though. That would be VERY noticeable. I suspect 2nd. That is what it feels like at least. It will go, just feels down on power. If it were in 4th or even 3rd I would think it would barely even gain enough rpm to move on its own. I will try to get codes out of it tomorrow.

That's because you don't understand how a torque converter works. No matter what gear the transmission starts in the engine speed will go up when you start to move because of the torque converter. I've driven trucks that start in fourth gear. You can drive it, it's just sluggish to get started from a stop.
